Nope! You might be thinking of Aubrey. They placed a second round tender on him. Teams would have to give us their 2nd round pick if they signed him. Pickens is not a free agent because they placed the franchise tag on him. He either signs or he sits out.

Pickens can be signed by any team. He is not under contract or prohibited from negotiating with any team in the NFL

Ummm…yes he can. How do you think a team owes Dallas 2 #1 picks if they sign him. They cannot sign him without negotiation. LOL. Plus, it’s the non-exclusive tag. Any team can make him an offer. Then Dallas can either match that offer or let him go. If he goes to another team, we can demand 2 first round picks or settle for less if the team wants to negotiate with us.

He has not signed it. He may, in fact, talk to any team he wants about a possible contract to play for them. All 32 teams are aware of how the non-exclusive franchise tag works. Obviously you are not.

If Pickens were under contract he’d have to attend mandatory team activities or be fined. He does not have to attend and cannot be fined. If he were under contract he could be traded. He cannot be traded because he has not signed the franchise tag.

He can wait until the very day before the first regular season game, sign the tag, show up to play and is guaranteed over $1.5 million per week for the next 18 weeks without regard for his effort, performance, or his demeanor. Even then he cannot be traded, or sign a contract with any team including the Cowboys.

George Pickens is in a pretty good place right now.
 
So he sits out and the cowboys view him as a bad person for this and he really won't get another deal here

Flying stunt helicopters, driving ATVs, paragliding, and drug use are all guarantee-voiding contract prohibitions you’ll find in every contract.

George Pickens can literally go on YouTube, show himself driving an ATV out of a helicopter he was solo flying upside down with no license, and then do illicit self medication mid air after his parachute opened and neither the cowboys nor the NFL can do absolutely nothing because he is currently not their employee.
 
The Pickens situation as follows because some people think he cannot sign with another team::

A non-exclusive franchise tag is
a one-year, guaranteed tender for NFL players, offering a lower salary cap hit than the exclusive tag but allowing the player to negotiate with other teams. The original team has the right to match any offer sheet or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation

He’ll do what he thinks is best for him. Just like every team understands how the non-exclusive franchise tag works, every team understands why a player may not be happy about playing on the tag. Even if Pickens were not to show up until very the day before the season, he’s young, he’s proven himself, and teams are not going to hold it against him that he was not pleased with a CBA ruling and how the Dallas Cowboys decided to use it in deference to him.

If there is no problem with the Cowboys not being sure about a future with Pickens, it’s fair that Pickens is not sure about a future with the Cowboys. The team and the player both have rights under the CBA. They should both exercise them in their best interest.

I don’t understand why fans get so upset over this situation. Let’s look at the facts:

1. Pickens is under contract. He will play for the Cowboys or he will not play at all. For this season the Cowboys hold some degree of leverage. The player will play for LESS under the tag than if he signs.

2. From Pickens’ side of this equation he COULD approach Dallas for a deal that gets him paid NOW instead of playing on the tag. The incentive to do that is injury is not as much of a risk on a long term deal, or may have a bad year and hurt his value.

3. The Cowboys can tag him a second time if they choose. It might still be less to pay him on a second tag and Pickens still has the risk of loss mostly on him. After that if Pickens left Dallas would get a comp pick for his departure.

4. Dallas can’t force Pickens to sign a long term deal. The ADVANTAGE for Dallas to Pickens signing a long term deal is it helps manipulate the cap numbers and provides flexibility there. The negative is that the risk of loss shifts back to Dallas at that point.

5. Any rational person has to assume that both sides are looking out for their own personal interests. That’s reasonable and to be expected.

6. The reading of the tea leaves says two things:

A. Pickens wants more than Dallas is willing to pay (which you can’t fault the Cowboys for)

OR

B. The Cowboys believe the risk of loss in paying Pickens outweighs any benefits the Cowboys receive by signing Pickens longer term.

I hope that helps some of you. Leave the emotion out of this situation. It’s just business.

Good post, some fans are tired of watching this front office wait too long on every contract negotiation, every time. This front office never learns from its past mistakes, they overpay on player contracts or lose good players as a result. Shift out of turtle gear, be proactive, find a way to hurry up the pace, communicate with the agent. Try to gauge the interest from the league. Find out what Pickens wants per season, keep him long term if you can make it work, trade him for high draft capital in this draft if you can't. Do smart things that help this football team.

Never ever make a big multi-year commitment to a player like Pickens.
 
Also - I’ve seen it said by several fans here that the holdup may be Pickens asking for too much.

If that’s true, then do something. Either sign him or move him. It’s late March. If this organization doesn’t know what it’s willing to pay until “the deadline” then they don’t know what they are doing.

The best NFL organizations serious about building a great roster get things done by mid-March. Either pay or move on. It’s not rocket science.

Two options:
  1. Agree to a negotiated contract at market value (no self respecting top NFL player will take less) OR…
  2. If you cannot pay market value for a player like Pickens, move him and save the cap space to do other things.
WAITING IS STUPID. (Look at the Parsons mess as an example)
