Bob's Blog - Football 301: Decoding Garrett - Week 9

I don't like how Gurode's pre-snap stance the direction of his snap display which direction the play is going. I know it's unbalanced line that direction, but I'm not sure why he's being so obvious.
I think it is more or less that he is snapping from the Shotgun and the fact that he is right handed. I do remember leaning slightly when I was a C snapping shotgun in HS..

Sturm has really stepped it up this year. I can't wait for his analysis every week... good nuts and bolts stuff...

He took over what we lost with Breer. Most of the rest of the Dallas media are on a Billy Bush level...

Great football stuff and Collinsworth was REALLY good in these clips. He called a couple of these before they even happened...

RJ has been doing his homework... and it shows...

Sturm is manna from heaven. :D

And a side note, the only real "jokers" on the Cowboys D are Ware and Rat, with Brooking starting to come on strong. But some future "jokers" are Jason Williams and Stephen Hodge. I love those kind of players. Sensabaugh is so athletic he could be one too.

There's a very high correlation between teams that run a lot of knee formation and winning percentage.

The proof is in the pudding. We should run it more often.
I only scanned Sturm's blog, but what's the knee formation?

Personnel group for kneeing the ball at the end of the game.

Not sure on that last play where Barber ran for 16 yards why Trent Cole would try to come in so fast. Did he really think the Cowboys were going to throw there? The best he could have done was luck into a stuff on Barber, which would have made a 3 and out more likely, but he took a big chance losing containment on his side and ended up giving Barber a big lane to run through. I would think that late in the game when the team is content to run the clock out, you should focus on stopping the run.

I thought that's what that meant. I usually just think of it as Victory formation.

Very true and I agree with your point whole-heartedly, but keeping Witten in to block on a 3rd and 13 is much different than keeping him in on a 4th and goal from the 5 to win the game.

Exactly. When it's the final play of the game and the routes are all going to be short developing routes anyway, I don't agree with keeping Witten in to block. This was a double move by Austin which means he HAD to have the extra couple of seconds for it to develop. He wouldn't need that from the 5 yard line.

I think it's just the camera angle that's makng you think he's not horizontal to the LOS. Look at his feet with the hash marks.

Plus the D Lineman is off his right shoulder.

Outside of Sturm, Chad Peters of the SA-Express is one of the only other voices of reason for this team...

Orsborn is a distant third...

I hope we get to run some more of that "Knee" formation.

that one is my favorite.

...wish we could run it even in the 1st half:rolleyes: , but i guess it needs to be "set up";)

I love the words "masterpiece" and "perfect" being used to describe the Cowboy's offense.
And someone needs to give the ol' Red-Headed Genius a little bit of credit, the guy is doing work. It was a shaky start and it may finish that way but he is doing a very good job.
(I'm sure the skins wouldn't mind having him)

Top notch stuff. Truly a pleasure to read and watch. Many thanks.

I'd agree, but I don't see much of his work. All I see is Osbornes.

Mr. Chad needs to work the 'boys beat more often.

I need a cold shower. Best stuff for football fans ever. I actually feel sorry for other teams fans that they don't have Bob Sturm.

I posted a few of Bob's Decoding series for Atlanta fans to read before that game. I specifically remember one of them saying that only would Dallas get such a great breakdown of our games. Seattle fans were equally impressed as well.

Bob stands in a class of his own and really helps elevate a person's appreciation for the game.

Awesome stuff by Sturm.

I want to wholeheartedly agree with trickblue's assessment of Collinsworth here. While I don't like the Football Night in America Pregame Show on NBC at all, I enjoy the call of the game very much. Michaels and Collinsworth call a good game and they are MUCH better than the Buck/Aikman team.
