...and what have these high offensive numbers/rankings bought this team when push came to shove the last three years?...the offensive numbers are declining by the week, especially the running game...we are seeing the same trajectory as years past...this offense is now in the same place it was during the first half of the Kansas City game...this team is no closer to being 9-0 than the Saints are to being 6-3...if Victor Butler does'nt shoestring tackle McNabb one can wonder how that game would've ultimately ended up...if Austin is double-teamed then Williams is going to have to be the man from here on out...right now he's not cutting it...as he goes so will the Cowboys go...the only time this offense has looked efficient is when it has faced teams who don't have a winning record...i mean we're talking :38 seconds short of being shut out...i don't care how good the Packers defense is supposed to be...only Detroit was shut out by this team...every other team scored at least 15 points...the rookie Freeman beat those guys, albeit with special teams help...nobody escapes blame from this loss and that includes Jason Garrett...

...more offensive outings like last weekend and 6-3 will slowly morph into 9-6 and playing Philadelphia again at the end of the year for a playoff spot...we all know how that turned out last year...

RHG is not getting a chance to learn from someone who knows more about the game than he. Phillips should have gone into the offensive meetings last week and said, "Look, Capers and I have similar approaches. If I were playing against you on Sunday, here's how I would try to defend you."
So one could conclude that the combination of Garrett's relative inexperience and the lack of teaching moments from the head coach are a major contributor to his impatience (bordering on panic) when things don't work.

Excellent thread!

Wade’s first year, Sparano was here; OL coach and asst head coach; he helped Garrett probably more than we know. 13-3 record. Garrett was smiling; he had the appearance that he was a genius.

Exit Sparano; Parcells needed an experienced guy to join him in Miami.

Garrett wasn’t smiling last year with the circus running amuck.

JJ decided to make the offense more Romo friendly and he jettisoned the circus; tried to bring in experienced help for Garrett – Dan Reeves. JJ blew that. He recognized that Garrett needed more experience, more learning for him to become a more complete coordinator. JJ failed to get that done.

The Cowboys are 6-3 nonetheless. Garrett’s offense has looked good at times; looked incredibly unprepared against the Pack and Dom Capers’ defense.

The players obviously could have executed better in each of their losses. Blitzes could have been picked up better. Are Hudson Houck and Jason Garrett working well together? The head coach – a head coach, as was pointed out, should be able to help the OC modify the game plan – adjust to what is happening on the fly; Wade obviously isn’t able to do that. Supposedly, this is what Dan Reeves would have been doing. A good GM would have had this covered!

I think it should at least be pointed out to those who are talking about all the big plays that we missed in that game, that's what the blitz is supposed to do.

Romo didn't overthrow Austin and Bennett because he just threw the ball too hard. It's because pressure forced him to throw the ball earlier than he was used to. It's all about timing. They work on these plays day in and day out to get the timing down to the point where it is basically muscle memorization. And when that timing is disrupted, which is the primary goal of a blitz, these things happen.

So IMO, because everything we do is from the shotgun and we have no true quick hitting run plays to speak of, I would not be suprised to see this kind of pressure for the rest of the season in this copy cat league...

Wish someone would dissect Wade's playcalling after our defense plays poorly.

Our offense has won us plenty of games, can't say the same for the D. I've never seen a guy with a top 5 offense get grilled like Red Balls has.

I agree that Garrett is getting beat up too much the last few days, but that's the way it works around here... There's a theme of the week, and this week it's that our O basically got shut out last weekend. This week we might give up 30 points and the D will get hammered.

I will say that the top-5 O is only in yards, which don't matter much. We're 10th in scoring, and the D is 8th.

What's maybe worse is that I think if you made a chart of our offense the last couple of years, it's gone steadily down as the season has gone on, and that's a little concerning. Maybe someone can actually make that graph.

Here is a quick graph of points per game for 2007 - 2009. We obviously have had a bad december in recent years (pre Wade too), so I think you definetly see a drop in production towards the end of the year.

Bonus points: Can you see where Romo missed some games last year?

Defenses rarely "win" games. They keep the offense in the game in order for them to win it. The defense hasn't really collapsed, but may have not come up with stops when it needed to, in particular in some 3rd and long situations. I'm not sure what the Cowboys' defense is ranked with respect to this rating. From my perspective, it seems that the defense has come up with more stops and given the offense the opportunities to do what they are supposed to do. It's hard to tell exactly what's wrong because there is a mutual push and pull between both offense and defense. The defense hasn't really collapsed this year (maybe the Giants game could be a possibility), but the offense has failed miserably to put points on the board as a result of Garrett's suspect play calling, especially last week. Yards matter little. Points are what really matter.

I see what Bob is saying,i'm just looking at it a little differently. The team wasn't prepared for what they saw, that goes on the staff. On the other hand the players were in a position to make some plays.Romo had 2 overthrows that cost the team points, one to Austin and one to Bennett. The pick at the goal line was because of a lack of execution more than anything else.Folk missing that field goal from 38 yards didn't help any either. The Williams fumble didn't help nor did that drop.If the players had made a few of those plays we most likely wouldn't be talking about a loss in Green Bay.Back to the pressure caused by Capers defense,i'm just of the opinion that the players weren't able to identify who was where and who was what.If you can't identify the defensive keys in front of you it doesn't matter what formation your in.

Craig

don't forget the witten pick on the long throw to choice.

just so many plays that didn't quite make it.

but then you got two options when you don't execute, keeping trying and have romo win/lose or go conservative and lean on the run game? garrett never chooses the run option.

also, on run plays, gb was bringing up 8 in the box, and the safety was blitzing a lot of times stuffing the runner in the backfield.

noticed that the gb linebackers diagnosed run/pass everytime. they weren't caught by playaction nor screens/draws.

compare to the dallas def which was fooled on most screen plays. only good plays by brooking/spencer nullified them.
