COVID Bohanna out

I was surprised to see that Billings is not on a 53 man roster.
- He opted out of 2020.
- He played 6 games with the Browns this season.
- He is currently on the Dolphins practice squad.

I watched all of his snaps in the game this season that he played the most snaps (28%).
- He is very fat now.
- He appears to have been on the Dontari Poe diet and workout plan during his Covid opt out year.
- With Cleveland, he generally came in for 2 or 3 snaps and then exited.
- The most I saw was 4 snaps in row before exiting.

He was very strong vs the run when he was with the Bengals.

Thanks for the review, much appreciated. I’m not sure how you feel, but I think upcoming opponents will try to test our run defense and I think a big body like Billings would help, especially with Hamilton gone and now Bohanna out.

In looking at past games this year, the teams that best played with us or beat us were usually the ones that had the most success running the ball.

And I certainly think that Philadelphia is a much different team than the one we defeated in week three.

The v&@us that you aren’t allowed to talk about or mention is a real pain in the rear.

The Cards aren’t a power running team and rarely commit to it for a whole game. I think our current stable of DT’s will handle that and I don’t think this would’ve been a game where Bohanna played a ton of snaps like he might against Philly.

We’ll see a lot of Nickel and pass rushing DT’s.
Big B will clear in 5 days.

I’d prefer to have more options available at defensive tackle. I think these next two opponents will try to test our run defense.

He's just a body but I understand what you mean. I liked Hamilton better but bohanna is a draft pick who might become better over the years. Just unimpressed with him this year.

I expect Faoliu to be called up from the PS. Faoliu played pretty decently in preseason. Maybe Faoliu is getting better and the reason the Cowboys let the Broncos poach Hamilton.

I saw potential with Faoliu in preseason. I think he played in one game early in the season, maybe some special teams action.

Faoliu flashed as a pass rushing DT in the preseason but was terrible vs the run.

He was active for 1 game this season with 13 snaps vs the Panthers.

I reviewed him in that game.
- Most of his snaps were on passing plays.
- He flashed as a pass rushing DT when he won with his first step but was stalemated if he didn't.
- He needs to live in the weight room this offseason and work on technique.

Faoliu is the opposite type DT than Hamilton.
- Hamilton is a run plugger.
- I don't think Faoliu had any impact on the Cowboys decision to move Hamilton back to the practice squad.
- With Hill and Gallimore off IR, they had a full house at DT (Gallimore, Hill, Odighi, Watkins, Bohanna).
- Also, they've been playing snaps with 4 DEs on the field in 3rd and medium/long situations, further reducing the total snaps for DTs.
- When Hamilton was active, he played more snaps than Bohanna, but they obviously like Bohanna's upside more than Hamilton.
- Hamilton has been in the NFL since 2015. He is likely as good as he is going to get at this point.

He’s definitely had his ups and downs. But I think Hamilton had some of his own. I think it was specifically in the Denver game when a run stuffer was trying to get cute with stripping the ball and failing to just make the tackle.

They could try signing him for a week then trying to get him to the practice squad.
- They'll be able to use 2 practice squad players per game in the playoffs and I don't think PS players can be poached during the playoffs.

That sounds good to me! But when do I ever get what I want anyway?

The team seems overly preoccupied with safety and corners and isn’t doing enough at linebacker or defensive tackle in my opinion. Small critiques in an otherwise stellar season.

They seem to have more faith in their run defense than I do, and hopefully they’re right.

Arizona is 10th in rush yards per game in 2021.
A lot has been Kyler and splash run plays for their RB’s. James Connor leads them in attempts by almost 100 carries and is a 3.7 YPA guy. Edmonds has more pop but his 5.5 YPC is a big play kinda thing rather than a consistent 5 yard carry.

My point is we aren’t worried about them being a between the tackles team, where Bohanna would be needed. Limit the big off tackle run plays where guys can bounce things and you’ll get them pass happy.

  • Some of the reasons that they don't always play the big DTs vs the run:
    • They often play big Nickel in situations that other defenses play Nickel.
    • The Cowboys DEs are above average against the run.
    • Their SS is a biscuit short of being a LB.
    • At CB 2 of 3 are above average vs the run.

Agree.

Run stuffing DTs like Hamilton don't tend to play much vs running QBs.
- Pass Rushing personnel tend to be better in pursuit of running QBs.

I hope you’re right, but I feel that both Arizona and Philadelphia will do their best to test this defense with the running game. The teams that have are the ones that have done the best against the Cowboys. And in many cases, they won.

I think our opponents can watch the tape and see what the Dallas defense is doing vs the pass, so they look for potential weaknesses. Running game is where I expect them to try.

I liked the Parcells quote.

And again, I hope my fears about the run defense are unfounded.

I understand that completely. That’s where our offense comes into play. If they are scoring then you’re putting a lot of pressure on the Cards to keep up with a coach that likes to pass.

If we’re on offensively and the rush defense holds early the game script will definitely be in our favor. Our redzone numbers at home are great. Let’s hope that holds up.
