Bones needs to stay

Overrated like everyone in this organization. The new HC should be able to decide who he wants to work with anyway like someone already mentioned, but of course we all know that's not how things work with Jerry.

This is the least of my worries.

I haven’t thought once about the special teams coordinator since the season ended.

Is he your uncle?

I doubt he stays
Yep, he's not staying to be STC, especially as we're conceivably losing: Turpin and Anger this year and Aubrey the following year (for the CAP Deniers, those are the type of players you lose). He'll get a better gig with a competitive team.

We'll see on Aubrey. Just hired Stephen's BFF in Todd France.

While he's only 2 years into his deal, since he's entering year 3 as an UDFA the team can work on some type of renegotiation.

Article 7, Section K iii :
A Rookie Contract for an Undrafted Rookie may not be renegotiated, amended or altered in any way until after the final regular season game of the player’s second contract year.

Even if nothing happens this offseason, he's going to be a RFA at the end of the 2025-26 season so Dallas will hold his rights till the 26-27 season.

I'd assume they would like to lock him up to an extension, but we'll see what France comes with.

I was trying to recall the last UDFA rookie that was successful within his first 2-3 years. Collins was one, but that was under the last CBA.

Jerry should interview GB ST coach Rich Bisacchia as HC . Went 7-6 under Davis in Las Vegas when Gruden was run out and the players wanted Bisacchia back . Of course Davis didn’t do it .

Plus he’s worked in Dallas before he knows what he’s in for with the Art Gallery

While I’m not big on Jerry picking HC’s staff I think he should lock Bones up asap and just say that’s the way it is. He found Turp and Aubrey and we have the #1 ST’s unit in football.
He's an elite ST's coach.

Because he did find them.

The Dallas Cowboys found KaVontae Turpin after he had a breakout season in the 2022 USFL. The Cowboys' special teams coordinator, John Fassel, had been watching Turpin since 2018.

How the Cowboys found Turpin
  • Watched his college games: Fassel watched Turpin's returns at TCU.

  • Followed him in other leagues: Fassel followed Turpin in the Fan Controlled Football league, Spring League, and USFL.

  • Contacted his agent: The Cowboys were the only team to contact Turpin's agent, Lynn Lashbrook, before signing him.
The Dallas Cowboys found Brandon Aubrey after special teams coordinator John Fassel evaluated him during the USFL season. Fassel watched Aubrey play in person at a USFL game and was impressed.

How the Cowboys found Aubrey
  • USFL draft
Aubrey was drafted by the Birmingham Stallions in the 32nd round (260th overall) of the 2022 USFL draft.

  • Text messages
Fassel texted Aubrey during the USFL season to encourage him and let him know he was being watched.

  • In-person game
Fassel snuck onto the field during pregame to watch Aubrey play in person.
Bones is much respected in the NFL.

No, he needs to be the first one out the door and why are you giving him credit for finding them just because they play on STs? We all saw them both in the USFL. Bones is a disaster, horrible chances on fakes at the worst times and you can make a case that our STs were only good because of pure talent, not coaching. How many times did we need to watch Tolbert unable to block the gunners last year? Are our coverage guys running down on kickoffs and punts or our blocking on returns really impressive over the last few years?
He had the best special teams unit in football. A fool would get rid of that. Plus it’s special teams. I don’t think a coach even cares who their special teams coach is.

Horse poop. Turpin was the MVP of the league. Aubrey was all USFL. If you didn’t know of both of them you have no clue about what goes on in the off-season. Fassel has been horrible since he has been here. If he was following them for so long, what took so long to sign them.
31 other teams didn’t bother bringing in Turpin or Aubrey. Why not if they were all paying attention? Give the guy some credit. Was he perfect? No. However I can’t believe he was given green lights on fake punts without McCarthy signing off on it

I would bring Fassel back in a heartbeat. He was a miracle worker with Maher before the lights got too bright for that guy. Aubrey is pretty much a league minimum UDFA turned into the top guy in the league in his mid 20s. Kickers are weird and structured, it might not be safe to assume duplicate results with a new staff.

Now I dont think one player is a reason to bring a coach back, nor do I think he should be pushed onto a new head coach, but special teams is an area I would be mildly worried about with a new staff coming in.
