I've been trying to figure out a way to upgrade our interior pass. One way would be to draft a DE that could play outside on early downs and move inside on passing downs. I think that's why they've shown so much interest in Milton Williams. Kwitty Paye would be one option on day one but another day 2 option could be Carlos Basham. His draft profile even suggests that as his role for an NFL team. What do you guys think?

Overview
Three-year starter at defensive end with burly frame, heavy hands and an ability to take on physical rigors of the NFL. His rush attack is more technical and explosive, using active hands, spin counters and a thoughtful approach. His lack of suddenness and edge speed could get him pegged as an early-down end while moving inside to become an interior rusher on passing downs. He needs to become comfortable handling the heavy lifting as a run defender as he's much more likely to be a worker bee than playmaker in that regard. He's strong and plays heavy at the point of attack with leverage to sit down and battle for his space of turf. He's unlikely to produce headline-making production, but should be a good pro.

Strengths
  • Burly build with heft and power in uppers and lowers.
  • Efficient hand fighter who's able to play past initial blocks in edge alignment.
  • Ability to use tackle's forward momentum against him.
  • Fights over top of back-side cutoffs.
  • Gets skinny knifing through B-gaps with sudden arm over.
  • Punch into full-arm extension is instant.
  • Rush hands are extremely active and sufficiently violent.
  • Drives under and through redirect blocks at the turn.
  • Effective counter spins and can even stack them back-to-back.
  • Instinctive rush approach with ability to reset mode of attack.
  • Moves quickly for a big and hits with heavy thuds.
  • Lays into quarterbacks, causing fumbles during sacks.

one of my favorite DEs.
helluva player.
love his size.
he's a really good run defender in the times i've watched their games.
if we go DE in the 2nd...rousseau basham and turner are my 3.
just gimmie 1 of'm.

I like those guys too.

Considering how godawful the interior linemen are in the draft, it may take something like this just to get some play at tackle on passing downs

Do we really need a DE in the 1st round? I do like Bashem and a few others though.
I guess if BPA, but not sure what pick I would may be more disappointed over, a DE or an OL. When we need CB.
I guess some would say the same, being disappointed, if Pitts were taken there also, as some want OL over TE.

I am to the point I prefer a trade down, but do we really need more picks, we have 10 picks. Unless that trade down involves a 2022 1st rounder. Or they can trade back up for more 2nd and 3rd round picks.
I am also to the point, they can't go wrong with #10, a CB, OL, LB, or Pitts, I would be ok with. A DE in the mix probably ok also.

Basham or Turner would be excellent picks at 44. DLaws current backup, Armstrong, was a big drop off and was especially bad against the run. I think the last staff liked his ability to drop in pass coverage, something this staff won't care about.

Basham or Turner could get the backup minutes behind DLaw and get the inside snaps on pass downs, basically playing starters snaps.

None of these guys they are talking about are first round.

Personally, I wouldn’t take a DE before the third round.

I was thinking at pick 44.

How many Bashams do you want on this team? We already have Tarell.

I like Rousseau a million times better
Rousseau is one of those prospects that the media may like more than scouts. A majority of his wins came lining up inside. He's not a natural bender, and he's so gangly that it takes him forever to gather and change direction. He profiles as a LDE/5T, yet he's currently way too thin to succeed in that role against NFL O-linemen. What do you do with him? I wouldn't be surprised at all if Rousseau slips to the 2nd round.

This. Keeping with a Miami comparison he could be another Calais Campbell. Terrific athlete, natural pass rusher who is still settling into his frame.
Good one.

I saw a lot of Campbell in college and was a guy who continued to get better as he became a pro.

He definitely was drafted on potential and it worked out.

I would say thats what makes this so difficult....did they peak already or are they still growing into themselves?

One big takeaway I saw consistently while watching Basham was that he often had trouble locating the ball. On more than a few plays I saw him crash the line and the play go right past him.

Good point I wonder if it's coachable. That's something I hadn't really considered until this year when I heard Chris Simms talking about it with his DT rankings.
