I have not read King Rat but I may. I started reading Tai-Pan and just could not get into it so I just figured Shogun was his good one and did not try the others.

I didn't care much for Tai-Pan either... King Rat is a much shorter novel than either of those two epic works,

As far as Michener, I can not say I have read his books but I did listen to an audio book of his once. It was Caribbean and I just did not care for it too much so I did not bother reading any of his others.

His novel "Texas" gives you the history of that state in a highly entertaining manner...

I will have to check out King Rat sometime soon though. I have not gotten a book in some time and really have been in the mood to read a NEW book. I get tired of reading the same ones over and over.:laugh2:

King Rat is an interesting look at black marketeering in Japanese POW camps, and the consequences for those involved in such activities...

First i'll tell you a book not to read, Joarney to the Center of the Earth.... it's terrible.

Most of the books by Michael Crichton (wrote Jurassic Park) are good reads for me. Most have been made into movies but the books are really good too.
Maybe if you want to read some mystery books you should read some Sherlock Holmes books, they're classic.

If we're talking the classics, it's tough to beat Edgar Allen Poe... some literary critics say he was the greatest author of short stories who ever lived... and of course, it's quite dark, quite macabre...

They say he was a cokehead, but the cokeheads I knew generally didn't have such DARK thoughts...

4. Cruel & Unusual by Patricia Cornwell (December 1993),
5. The Body Farm by Patricia Cornwell,

9. Point of Origin by Patricia Cornwell,
10. Black Notice by Patricia Cornwell,
11. The Last Precinct by Patricia Cornwell (October 2000),
12. Blow Fly by Patricia Cornwell (October 2003),
13. Trace by Patricia Cornwell (September 2004).
14. Predator, was released on October 25, 2005.

Thanks for the list. I have not read the last three on that list.
Also not a Kay Scarpetta novel but she had an interesting book about solving who she thinks was jack the ripper.

So thanks for the list. I may have to get to a book store or local library and check those out. I will say though that her earlier scarpetta novels were better than the last few I read. Maybe she is just running out of ideas with that character.

Another name to consider Jeffery Deaver.

Some may know one of his books by the Movie the Bone Collector with Denzel Washington.

That is one of the characters that Deaver has wrote multiple books with...the Lincoln Ryhmes novels.

He also has other books but I have only read a few. I kind of liked the blue nowhere (good for some that are really into computers) but the basic plot of it was a little weak.

Another thing about reading some of these authors I have mentioned with characters they write about. It is best to look them up on amazon or somewhere to get the books in the correct order (scarpetta, davenport, rhymes and other character novels) because you can be lost reading them out of order.

I agree. Her earlier books were much better than those that came later.

The Ripper book was really a great idea/story I thought.

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy
Foe, by J.M. Coetzee
I've read Waiting For The Barbarians and Disgrace by Coetzee. Both were excellent. I'm not much of a mystery book reader, but I have read one Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye. Very good read. The Crow Road by Iain Banks is another good one.
