Did the previous Kong vs Godzilla in 2021, set the stage for this new Kong/Godzilla New Empire smash success hit ?

Seems that a lot of these franchises that took a hit in the pandemic are coming back strong. Dune 2 made a lot more, but especially considering the first one was a simultaneous stream/movie release. I remember the first Kong vs Godzilla was somewhere in the pandemic as well with the same format. Maybe they shouldn’t have given up on Wonder Woman so quickly, and made a third film.

Used to be you could go to Box Office Mojo and get all you wanted; now half of it is behind a paywall

This one had a smaller budget but is doing better than the last one which is always a good sign

One has to remember that hyperbole is the name of the game when studios are talking about a movie

This one will make money; but it has to gross worldwide probably $500 million to do so

When a film is in the theaters, the studio only gets a certain percentage of the box office gross. They get more of it early which is why so much emphasis is on how good a film does in its first weekend and first month. Usually that is when the studio gets more of the gross. One reason the US box office remains so important is that for US movies they get more of the domestic gross than international
Its the exact opposite for foreign films
A good rule of thumb is that if the gross is three times the budget then the movie is making good money
Now a lot of films make their nut in merchandizing and streaming and tv and so on. You have to work some anymore to lose big money on a movie but its been done

That second film was an embarrassing failure.

Actually a lot of the franchises are showing age and moviegoer boredom. People got out of the habit of going to the movies and the studios are not doing a very good job of giving them reasons to come back. Entertainment not social statements is what they want to see. You look at the movies that do well and that message is clear.

Wonder Woman 1984 was terrible. I’m sure Kong/Godzilla is, too, but at least it looks and sounds amazing. Top Gun Maverick made a ton of money, because it was a good movie.
