Sidbury In Demand
Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 31, 2009, 12:09 p.m.

University of Richmond defensive end/outside linebacker Lawrence Sidbury drew a big NFL crowd to his campus Pro Day workout with 31 NFL teams in attendance, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com.

That included Carolina Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney as well as the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins’ linebackers coaches as Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Vic Fangio oversaw the workout drills.

At 6-foot-2, 265 pounds, Sidbury is regarded as a strong pass rushing candidate. He has visited the Buffalo Bills and has schedule visits with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams.

Sidbury ran the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, bench pressing 225 pounds 28 times and turned in a 35-inch vertical leap.

Last season, Sidbury posted 7 1/2 sacks. His workout numbers are superior to his production at this point, but NFL teams are enamored of Sidbury’s potential.

Meanwhile, Richmond running back Josh Vaughan had an impressive workout.

He ran a 4.59 in the 40-yard dash, registered a 37-inch vertical leap, a 9-11 broad jump and bench pressed 225 pounds a staggering 36 times.

Tight end Joe Monteverde had a 35 1/2 inch vertical leap.

2. Lawrence Sidbury JR.
3. Chip Vaughn
4. Jason Williams

Make it happen, Jerry Jones.

Give the Giants some of their own medicine. (Ware/Spencer/Sidbury JR.) No mercy.

Sidbury Jr. had 11.5 sacks. He had 4 in his national championship game. The Cowboys will stand him up and teach him technique and moves. He could play both sides. He's got long arms and big hands, and that will help him in the NFL. IF I"m Dallas, I move up for him if I have to do it. A small move up may get it done, or he may fall to you. A team like the Rams could spoil it, but they would be reaching.

I really like this guy but those sack numbers should have a 1 in front of them playing at that level of competition. Also D Lineman with great measurables dont always translate at the next level. Mike Mamula comes to mind, Pittman, Carver, Vernon Gholston etc. Honestly I'd love to see them somehow get Barwin, I think alot safer pick with big upside.

It looks like the 3-4 OLBs will be over-drafted:(

By as much as a round.

I like Sidbury but he is really a r3 type prospect at best and will go high r3 at latest.

Could not agree more. Some more info from NFL Draft Countdown:

Richmond Lawrence Sidbury, Jr.
Height: 6-23/8 | Weight: 266 | 40-Time: 4.64

Strengths:
Very athletic...Good bulk...Has extremely long arms...Excellent timed speed...Really quick with a burst...Can be a force off the edge...Great mobility and range...Terrific motor...Does a nice job in pursuit...Has big hands...Versatile...Team leader...Productive...Has a ton of upside.

Weaknesses:
A bit shorter than you'd prefer...Doesn't play as fast as he times...Not an elite pass rusher...Does not have a wide array of moves...Has some trouble getting off blocks...Doesn't use his hands well...Not real strong or powerful...Is just average versus the run...Low level of competition.

Notes:
Could also project to outside linebacker at the next level...Competed on the Richmond track & field squad...A two-year starter...Was named 1st Team All-CAA in 2007 and 2008...Ended his career on a high note by recording four sacks in the Spiders win over Montana in the FCS National Championship game...Had a strong showing at the East-West Shrine Game and earned an invite to the Senior Bowl...Blew up at the Scouting Combine and ran the fastest defensive line forty...Intriguing prospect but also a bit of a Workout Warrior and didn't play up to his impressive measurables during the Senior Bowl week...Might be more of a one-dimensional pass rusher or situational type while he develops.

sounds like he's just fast and played weak competition.

no, go back and look at the fumbles he has caused and recovered, thats always a good mark of a linebacker,

remember jimmy johnson with darrin smith, he was almost as fast as a safety and he could cover, and dixon edwards, speed kills, plus the fact jason williams weighs about 249, thats good silze for a linebacker

As much as I would pass out from the pure joy of getting Sidbury and Williams, I would puke if we used a 3rd on Vaughn.

Actually, the scouting consensus is that Sidbury has little or no moves, and he does not play as fast as he times.

Have not watched much on him besides youtube highlights and combine stuff, but that is what scares me the most about drafting athletic freaks so high. Freaky athleticism is great, but it has to combined with something else_consistent dominance, nasty demeanor, football IQ, intincts, something.

but if you're getting the guy to be a 3rd down pass-rusher, he would be great

we could afford to draft a player that has some questions, because we'd be relying on him as a bit-player, asked to do one thing, get after the QB, and he has the affinity for that

Why not draft Cody Brown in the 2nd instead?

He's put up comparable numbers against much better competition, no?

I like Veikune or Follett better too, if just drafting for a 3rd down pass rushing specialist. But both guys have better instincts, coverage ability, run stopping and nastiness. Not to mention better value, 3rd to 5th round versus 2nd to 3rd.

I wouldn't mind that, I just think if you can get a player who may turn out to be special, you do that

I guess that is where we differ, I am not as certain that Sidbury is a special player. Andy Studebaker had similar size, inexperience against big time competition, better pro day numbers and better production going into the draft last season, but he was a 6th round pick.

It may be due to Studebaker coming back from a leg injury, but IMO it has a lot to do w/the relatively weak DE class this draft. Players are going to be overdrafted, especially with all the teams converting to a 3-4.

So other than his measurables, what do you see in him? Seriously, I want to like the guy, especially b/c the Cowboys have shown interest.
