No matter how much the public and media try to predict what a team's 53-man roster will look like for the season opener, there always figures to be a handful of dark horses that overachieve and make the squad.

The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the hardest teams to figure out, as they regularly have players coming out of nowhere to make the 53-man roster. Last year, players like Dustin Vaughan and Davon Coleman made the final roster. Nobody would have picked either to make the team this time last year.

Now that offseason training activities and minicamps are over, it's time for the real players to shine. Normally, the players who stand out during offseason activities are the ones with athletic talents superior to the rest.

However, once the pads come on, the real football players stand out. It's also the first opportunity for the offensive and defensive linemen to truly show what they are capable of.

With that in mind, let's take a look at five dark-horse candidates to make the Cowboys' 53-man roster this season.

I think out of those Williams definitely makes it. I think this is the year they expand his role and really give him a look.

Many times injuries settle roster spot on every team

i dont deny that, so yes, not a walk off the limb for me to say, but i really couldnt give you a clear cut winner between Willams and Dunbar, as mcuh as i dont approve of Dunbar, that doesnt disqualify his talents either. And yes i would pull for Williams but if Dunbar is a better blocker and plays ST , than so much for what i want Dunbar is the man. But it soley should come down to offense because its going to be which RB gets the yards more. and right now, not enough evidence to tell which is which.

Whitehead possibly, but there are 3 or 4 other WR's with just of good of chance.
Crawford, I used to think more of a long shot. But lately a better possibility since he can play DT and DE.
Williams, I been saying he should replace Dunbar, unless they keep 4 and keep Dunbar.
Whaley, this is one of my pet cats to make it. I think he can push to make the roster. Or maybe it's more hoping he shows something to make it.
Weems, with all the depth I say he was last to make it, if they keep 9 OL. But with Green status unknown now, he should make it.

Jack Crawford, Ryan Williams and Darrion Weems wouldn't be considered darkhorses to me.

Reading that made me realize I have 0 knowledge on Jack Crawford other than he's from Penn St. and was drafted by the Raiders.

I also hope Whaley flashes some potential, how nice would that be?

I think Williams is definitely on the team if he stays healthy through the preseason, that's a pretty big if though.
