The road has not been kind to the Atlanta Falcons over the last couple of seasons, as they've gone just 4-12 straight up, 6-10 against the spread on it, but they rallied to win their first road contest of this season last week against the Giants. The Falcons get a chance at another road success when they visit the Tony Romo-less Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon in Arlington.
Point spread: The Falcons opened as 0-point favorites; the total was 44.5 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)
NFL pick, via Odds Shark computer: 27.0-26.1 Cowboys
Why the Falcons can cover the spread
Atlanta is off to a 2-0 start both SU and ATS under new head coach Dan Quinn, after rallying from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Giants in New Jersey Sunday 24-20.
The Falcons led 10-3 late in the first half and trailed 20-10 through three quarters, but quarterback Matt Ryan connected with Leonard Hankerson on a 10-yard scoring pass with 12 minutes left, then later hit Julio Jones for a 37-yard hookup that set up Devonta Freeman's two-yard scoring plunge with less than two minutes to go, propelling Atlanta to the victory.
Ryan ended up throwing for 363 yards without an interception Sunday, while Jones caught 13 passes for 135 yards.
The Falcons opened with a 26-24 upset of the Eagles, so they're already 2-0 SU and ATS against the NFC East this season.
Why the Cowboys can cover the spread
Dallas just went up to Philadelphia and quieted the Eagles to the tune of 20-10, winning SU as a seven-point post-time underdog. The Cowboys ran the ball for 109 yards and held the Eagles, who now feature former Dallas running back DeMarco Murray, to a total of seven yards on 17 carries. The Cowboys also won time of possession by a lopsided 40-20 margin, which helped them overcome the 18 penalties for which they were whistled.
Dallas opened this season by rallying to beat the Giants 27-26, so it's off to its first 2-0 start since 2008.
The really big news, of course, coming out of Sunday's victory was the broken collarbone suffered by quarterback Tony Romo. But Brandon Weeden looked great in relief, hitting on all seven of his passes for 73 yards and one score. So perhaps the Cowboys can survive without their No. 1 gunslinger.
Smart pick
Dallas is more than just Romo and Dez Bryant, but no doubt about it, their absences will be felt. And for a change Atlanta is healthy, relatively speaking. Both these teams are coming off tough road victories, so neither is catching the other on an emotional lull. Bottom line, in the NFL it's never a bad idea to expect the unexpected, so the smart money in this spot probably resides with the home side.
Betting trends
The Falcons are 1-5 SU in their last six games against the Cowboys on the road.
The Falcons are 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five games on the road in September.
The Cowboys are 1-5 ATS in their last six games at home.
