The Dak Prescott Project, also known as the 2016 Dallas Cowboys without Tony Romo, is 3-1 both straight up and against the spread. The Cowboys will be looking for more of the same when they host former TCU star Andy Dalton and his Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon in Arlington, Texas.
Point spread: The Cowboys opened as 1.5-point favorites; the total was 45.5 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark (line updates and matchup report).
NFL pick, via Odds Shark computer: 26.2-19.4 Cowboys (NFL picks on every game)
Why the Bengals can cover the spread
Cincinnati just snuffed a two-game losing streak with a 22-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins last Thursday. The Bengals took an early 3-0 lead, fell down 7-3 on a long Dolphins catch-and-run, but responded with a touchdown drive of their own to take the lead for good and close out hapless Miami from there, cashing in as seven-point favorites.
The Bengals outgained the Dolphins 362-222, as Dalton threw for 296 yards and a touchdown without an interception and dominated time of possession to the tune of a 38-22 margin. Meanwhile, the defense recorded five sacks.
Two weeks ago, Cincinnati lost to the Denver Broncos 29-17, but the Bengals led that game 17-16 well into the fourth quarter before giving up two scores in two minutes. Cincinnati outrushed the Broncos that day 143-52, but a long, late Denver pass-catch touchdown provided the knife in the back.
Why the Cowboys can cover the spread
Dallas opened this season with a one-point loss to the New York Giants but has won three straight since then, including a come-from-behind 24-17 victory at San Francisco last week.
The Cowboys fell down to the 49ers 14-0 early in the second quarter but rallied to take a 14-14 tie into halftime. They fell down again early in the third but took the lead for good on a 78-yard drive to a touchdown late in the quarter and tacked on a field goal to secure the win and the cash as two-point favorites on the road.
Dallas outgained the Niners 424-295, outrushed them 194-106 and won time of possession by a 36-24 slant. The rookies led the way, as quarterback Prescott threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns and running back Ezekiel Elliott rumbled for 138 yards and another score.
Smart pick
Are the Cowboys better with Prescott than Romo? Based on the recent track record, the answer to that question might be yes. The smart money here dines on Dallas.
