BR: Continued Instability Will Condemn Cowboys to NFC Pretender Status in 2014

Every year, Jerry Jones loudly proclaims that this is the year. This is the year that the Cowboys retake their spot as a perennial contender and regain their status as "America's Team."

Of course, every year the Cowboys then lurch and sputter their way to a .500 record, missing the playoffs after losing a do-or-die Week 17 game.

Unfortunately for fans of the Cowboys, the stage appears set for similar disappointments in 2014.

Well, except that the Cowboys may be hard-pressed to even force that Week 17 game in the first place.

Now, this is the point in many articles like this where players start getting taken to task. In some respects, they have it coming. The Dallas defense was horrific on too many levels to count last year. And whether you love quarterback Tony Romo or hate him, there's no denying that he has a staggering propensity to pick the worst possible moment to do something stupid.

However, they aren't the problem. The team's owner and general manager are the problem.

It isn't that Jones' strategy where coaches and personnel are concerned is "win the Super Bowl." It's that that's it. That's the plan. Four words. There's no structure. No vision. Just an NFL team flailing in four different directions at once.

It's already started this year.

Even after a third straight 8-8 season, Jones made it clear that head coach Jason Garrett would return for the final year of his contract:

Even defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who presided over last year's disastrous transition to the 4-3, is being brought back.

Offensive coordinator Bill Callahan, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky.

Mind you, Callahan still has a job, and his title. However, as ESPN reports, the Cowboys have hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan as "passing game coordinator."

And play-caller, despite the fact that ESPN's Calvin Watkins reported Callahan "opposes" the idea.

Now, it's completely within Jones' rights to hire whomever he wants to coordinate the offense, and Linehan's hire met with Garrett's approval according to Ed Werder of ESPN

Right sometimes you need to take it with a grain of salt, or sometimes a salt shaker.
I don't mind reading it, but I do it with caution, and dismiss it a lot. but it's something to read in the off season.

That covers the bases well. :)

Well, don't leave us hanging! :) What'd they say?

They really didn't speculate on how well the Cowboys would do, rather they just stated that things like this only happen in Dallas because of the Owner who is actually the problem.

The way they presented it, it seemed like they almost felt sorry for the Cowboys-- it wasn't like the condescending tone you'll get from Sreamin' A. Smith, but rather genuine confusion.

They talked a bit about how the Cowboys are a proud organization who has lost its way, and overall just could not comprehend how the moves we made yesterday are going to help.

Yea, that's the way Chris Berman or Tom Jackson present their condescending opinion, .. by acting like they feel sorry for us when they are actually rubbing our noses in it.

I have trouble arguing with anything written in the article. I posted a week or 2 ago that 2014 had 6-10 written all over it.

It's way too early for projections, but it still looks that way to me. Even with the switching of the decks chairs on this Titanic manned by Jerry Jones.

Yes it's the BR. Either read it or don't.

I think Jerry sponsors BR behind the scenes. That way no matter how bad the fans feel about Jerry, they will have an ever-present example of something that is far more incompetent than Jerry.

Heck, EPSN might sponsor them for the same reason.

I dunno, man.

I think you'd have to listen to it for yourself. Nothing really seemed fake about it. Honestly they really didn't spend too much time on it as to 'twist the knife' so to speak.

I really put no stock in what Greeny says, .. and I know Golick (sp?) doesn't really care about Dallas or feel compassion for us since he was an Iggle.

Fair enough.

But do you disagree with anything I paraphrased there?

Actually thought it was well written and covered many issues we are definitely having/going to have.

Excellent idea. Probably wrong as you know but great thinking. :)

Thanks. I'm not sure anything will change. I have no idea how good the coaches are except Garrett can field a good offense and Marinelli can coach DL. I also like Callahan and Pollack with Brown turning the OL into a pretty good one.

BR: Continued Instability Will Condemn Cowboys Lazy Writers to Pretender Status in 2014

Of course, every year the Cowboys then lurch and sputter their way to a .500 record, missing the playoffs after losing a do-or-die Week 17 game. rather than the 3-13 we thought was inevitable.

Unfortunately for fans of the Cowboys, the stage appears set for similar disappointments a billion articles like this to appear in 2014.

Fixed that.
