Whatever it is, Barry Church has just blown it out of the water and into low orbit.
In one of the stranger injuries in recent memory, the Dallas Cowboys safety missed practice earlier this week due to a Jolly Rancher-related incident.
According to The Associated Press (h/t James Brady of SB Nation), Church underwent an emergency root canal on Monday to treat a chipped tooth he incurred while chewing on a cherry Jolly Rancher.
The initial injury to this tooth occurred “about a week before practice,” according to Church, and he rushed to the dentist after waking up to “unbearable” pain in his mouth on Monday morning.
The procedure caused Church to miss out on a full day of training camp practices as well as a team walkthrough.
The safety said he caught “a couple of zingers” after returning to the team, which is natural considering Church sat out for 13 weeks last season with a torn Achilles tendon, and now, he’s getting sidelined by fruit-flavored hard candies.
The Internet also found the incident hilarious, and the joke started rolling as the news broke.
As goofy as the incident is, the situation could have been worse. At least Church injured his mouth on good candy. No one wants to have a chipped tooth, but if you’re going to do it, you cannot ask for a better treat than a cherry Jolly Rancher.
Those things are delicious.
While we’re discussing Cowboys' injuries, perhaps it’s time to project some potential strange injuries the team could face this year.
- Tony Romo: strained groin (Zumba)
- Miles Austin: mouth lacerations (bit tongue with vampire teeth)
- Jerry Jones: paper cut (wiped tears with legal tender)
We’ll see if any of those pan out, but it’s safe to say the Cowboys are already on their way to another rollicking Cowboys-ish season.
On Twitter, trying not to strain an index finger.
