Prescott, 23, has thrown for 519 yards and completed 62.7 percent of his passes, though he's yet to throw for a touchdown. He's also rushed for 18 yards and a score.
The Cowboys moved to 1-1 on Sunday after defeating Washington, 27-23.
Prescott was a fourth-round pick (135th overall) by the Cowboys in this year's draft and was expected to develop behind incumbent starter Tony Romo. But the injury bug bit Romo once again in late August, as he broke a bone in his back and is likely out until at least after the team's Week 7 bye, according to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Prescott impressed during the preseason, so his solid play isn't surprising. He has made a strong case early in his career that he's the future of the position for the Cowboys. But they won't hesitate to hand the reins back over to Romo once he's healthy.
"Tony’s situation when he’s back will be about whether he’s functional," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said when Davison asked him if the Cowboys will be more patient in bringing Romo back, given Prescott's strong play. "We’re a better team. We play better [with Romo].”
Still, the Cowboys are pleased that Prescott is geeting the opportunity to earn valuable playing time and experience, as Jones noted:
We’re getting to not only play winning football with Dak, we’re developing him. What’s he gotten—265-270 snaps against some of the greatest competition there is if you want to play that position. There can be quarterbacks in the league three years that can end up being top quarterbacks and don’t get to face that real live stuff.
The Cowboys haven't asked Prescott to win games solely with his arm, of course. The team has a stout offensive line and a talented rookie running back in Ezekiel Elliott. And veterans in the passing game such as tight end Jason Witten and superstar wideout Dez Bryant have helped ease the transition, too.
Still, Prescott has managed games, made key throws in crucial moments and led the Cowboys on touchdown drives of 75, 80 and 94 yards against Washington. For a Dallas team that went 1-11 without Romo last year, Prescott's play has been a revelation.
