When an opportunity presents itself, seize it.
That's what I did yesterday (Saturday, July 13) when Hall of Famer and Dallas Cowboy great Deion Sanders was in my coverage area of San Marcos.
"Prime Time" was in town to clash pads with local all-star youth squads. Once the fluff questions were out of the way, I asked Sanders about the Cowboys prospects for the upcoming season.
Sanders, along with another Cowboys legend and Hall of Famer and co-host Michael Irvin, notoriously ripped Romo (rightfully so, he threw three picks) following Dallas' season-ending loss to the Washington Commanders last year.
The NFL Network analyst was cautious and skeptical of the 'Boys outlook in 2013 when I spoke to him on Saturday. He pointed to quarterback Tony Romo, entering his 10th year in the league, as the primary component in the team's success or failure.
He also expressed a sentiment that Cowboys fans have shared for years: Life as a Cowboys fan takes a toll on your mental health.
"I really can't think outside the box and say I feel like they're going to do this or going to do that," Sanders said. "The Cowboys are the Cowboys, man. They're really a team that plays with your emotions, that plays with your heart starting from the quarterback on."
Sanders was also quick to note the Cowboys' immediate need for the "big uglies" to show vast improvement on both sides of the ball.
Protecting Romo and creating running lanes were problems the offensive line had throughout the 2012 season. Romo was sacked 36 times (tied for sixth with Cam Newton) and Cowboys ranked 31st in rushing in the NFL last year.
Defensively, Dallas struggled to pressure opposing quarterbacks, sacking the opposing signal-caller just 34 times, which tied for 20th in the league.
"You hope to God that the pieces of the puzzle, especially the offensive line and defensive line, that (the Cowboys) fix those pieces," Sanders said. "You won't know that until when you really get into battle."
