According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, the Dallas Cowboys have signed free agent running back Ryan Williams. The tailback had been released by the Arizona Cardinals on Monday.

Williams worked out with the Cowboys on Saturday morning, and two sources told ESPN Dallas' Tim McMahon that the workout impressed team officials.

However, the question was whether it would be good enough to earn a spot on the Dallas depth chart that already has the likes of DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar, Joseph Randle. The team also brought in undrafted rookies Ben Malena, J.C. Copeland and Glasco Martin for tryouts, so Williams had plenty of competition to beat out.

The former 38th-overall pick has struggled with injuries in his first three NFL seasons, appearing in just five games (all in 2012). At age 24, he still has time to figure things out, and could potentially be a quality complement to Murray in the Cowboys' rushing game if he can harness his potential, but is nothing more than depth at this point.

As McMahon notes, "The Cowboys have 90 players on their roster, so they would have to cut somebody to make room for Williams," and that player has not yet been announced. Williams told McMahon that team officials said the workout was "great."

This early in the offseason, it's no sure thing that Williams will even break camp with Dallas, but with his age and potential, he shouldn't have a tough time finding a tryout elsewhere if he winds up back on the free agent market.
