After yet another close loss last week, the Dallas Cowboys are now 0-7 straight-up and 1-6 against the spread since quarterback Tony Romo went down with that shoulder injury. But the cavalry is on the way, as Dallas hopes to have Romo back in action for Sunday's game at Miami.
Point spread: Dolphins opened as one-point favorites; the total was 46.5 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)
NFL pick, via Odds Shark computer: 25.8-25.4 Dolphins
Why the Cowboys can cover the spread
Dallas started this season 2-0 with Romo but has lost every game without him after giving up a late touchdown to lose at Tampa Bay last week 10-6. However, five of those losses have come by one score or less, and another came in a game against Atlanta in which the Cowboys led into the fourth quarter.
Dallas led the Buccaneers last week 6-3 deep into the game and had a chance to ice the victory late, but wide receiver Dez Bryant couldn't come down with a Matt Cassel throw on a potential third-down conversion—although, to be fair, it was a tough play. Tampa Bay then drove for the game-winning score with less than a minute to go, aided by a Cowboys holding call that negated a Jameis Winston turnover. Then, at the end, a no-call on a Bucs defender resulted in a Cassel pick, in turn resulting in another tough Dallas defeat.
The Cowboys are 2-7 on the season, but they don't think they're dead yet. They trail the 5-5 Giants by just 2.5 games for the lead in the NFC East, with several winnable games still on the slate.
Why the Dolphins can cover the spread
The Dolphins are now 3-2 both SU and ATS under interim head coach Dan Campbell, after coming from behind to upset the Eagles in Philadelphia last week 20-19. Miami fell down 16-3 in the first quarter, thanks in part to a botched kickoff return that basically resulted in nine Philly points. But a blocked punt provided the spark the Dolphins needed, helping them pull within 16-13 at the half, and they later took the lead for good on a great play by wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who rebounded a tipped Ryan Tannehill pass in the end zone for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Miami later made the defensive play of the game, picking off Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez in the end zone with about four minutes to go to secure the outright victory as a five-point road dog.
On the day the Dolphins didn't do a whole lot offensively, coming up with just 289 yards, but a much-maligned Miami run defense held Philly to 83 yards on 36 rushing attempts.
Smart pick
There's a chance Romo will come out rusty, but if he's worth three or four extra points, which might certainly be the case, the Cowboys can win this game. The Dolphins, meanwhile, even in winning last week, got outgained by almost 150 yards. The smart money here lies with Dallas.
Betting trends
The Cowboys are 4-1 SU in their last five games against the Dolphins.
The Dolphins are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games.
The Cowboys are 10-4 SU in their last 14 games on the road.
