McFadden Suffered Broken Elbow in Home Accident
Tuesday, June 14
Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News passed along the two-month timetable for a broken elbow from Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram confirmed the running back underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the damage.
David Helman of the team's official website noted the Cowboys are "optimistic" the veteran will be ready for camp after initially practicing with the injury last week. Jason Cole of Bleacher Report added that the "most optimistic diagnosis" for McFadden is that he'll be back two weeks prior to the start of the season. Cole added that the running back will "most likely" be back by the start of the campaign.
Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown told reporters that McFadden fell on his elbow trying to keep from dropping his cell phone.
McFadden's Injury the Latest in a Long List of Ailments in Career
Although there were moments when McFadden flashed vintage playmaking ability en route to 1,089 rushing yards last season, injuries remain a key part of his story. He's struggled to stay on the field consistently enough to make a major impact in recent years.
The 2008 first-round pick of the Oakland Raiders owns an extensive injury history. Last season marked just the second time he's played more than 13 games in a season. He also did it in 2014-15 with a lighter workload. More recently on the injury front, he dealt with a groin injury last November.
If the veteran back is forced to miss meaningful time, Alfred Morris will figure to get the first crack at a heavier workload behind fourth overall pick Ezekiel Elliott. Darius Jackson could also work his way into the rotation.
The arrival of Elliott means the latest setback for McFadden won't have as large of an impact as it would have had last season. But the offense will still be stronger if he's able to fully recover in time for the start of the regular season, if not sooner.
