Witten posted a letter to his Twitter account:
CBS Sports announced Tuesday that Romo was formally retiring and joining the network as its lead football analyst. Witten, on the other hand, won't be going anywhere after signing a four-year contract extension.
Romo and Witten both joined the Cowboys in 2003. Dallas selected Witten with the 69th overall pick in the third round, while Romo was an undrafted free agent.
After Romo took over as the team's starting quarterback in 2006, he and Witten formed a productive partnership. Witten was already a two-time Pro Bowler by that point, and having a consistent passer ensured he had many more Pro Bowls to come.
Between 2006 and 2016, Witten had 901 receptions for 9,804 yards and 50 touchdowns. During that span, he ranks third in receptions and ninth in receiving yards, per Pro-Football-Reference.com.
While Romo isn't solely responsible for Witten's NFL success, he unquestionably helped Witten likely gain enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he decides to walk away from the game.
