Latest on Claiborne's Diagnosis, Potential Surgery

Tuesday, Nov. 1

ESPN's Todd Archer, via ESPN's Adam Schefter, reported on Monday that the Cowboys fear Claiborne has a sports hernia that would keep him out of the lineup "indefinitely."

On Tuesday, ESPN's Ed Werder, citing a source, reported that the "Cowboys plan to give [Claiborne] time to heal and rehab before determining whether surgery [is] required for [the] groin injury." Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Claiborne is not scheduled for surgery at this time.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones admitted on Sunday that he is "concerned" about Claiborne's groin injury, according to Werder.

Claiborne Enjoying Best Year as a Pro

Claiborne, 26, went down with just under one minute remaining in regulation in Week 8. He had four tackles before exiting.

In his fifth season out of LSU, Claiborne is having his best NFL campaign to date. He's recorded 26 tackles and one interception while helping anchor a surprisingly solid Cowboys secondary. Pro Football Focus has graded him as an above-average starter all season, a major uptick from his near-bust status coming into 2016.

"He's got a lot of confidence. You see the interceptions and pass deflections," defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli told reporters. "But it's the tackling. His tackling has been outstanding. He has tackles for losses. He is a very sure tackler, and he is really bringing a physical presence to our secondary."

Claiborne previously suffered a concussion in a Week 6 win over the Green Bay Packers but recovered during the Week 7 bye and was able to return in Week 8.
