The maligned Dallas secondary took a hit Sunday night when Cowboys corner Morris Claiborne left the team's showdown against the New Orleans Saints with an injury.

Claiborne, who was demoted days earlier in favor of names such as Orlando Scandrick and Brandon Carr, needed help off the field after a play in the first quarter. Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram described the scene:

The No. 6 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft, Claiborne was outplayed by his teammates to start the season, ranking as the No. 92 corner in the NFL at Pro Football Focus (subscription required) on a list that ranked 97 players.

For now, his quest to regain the starting job in a secondary that entered Sunday surrendering an average of 250.3 passing yards per game is on the shelf. Benched or not, Claiborne was a key contributor the team will miss in the coming weeks against Houston, Seattle and the New York Giants.

Scandrick and Carr will remain in their current roles for the time being, while Sterling Moore and Tyler Patmon take on bigger jobs until Claiborne can return.
