The Dallas Cowboys have confirmed that Morris Claiborne will miss his second straight game on Sunday, listing him as out on their official website's injury report in preparation for a matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
Claiborne, who suffered a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Dallas' 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 8, sat out last Sunday's victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Slot cornerback Orlando Scandrick moved to the outside, while B.W. Webb took over as the team's nickel guy.
Both will likely stay in those positions on Sunday, comprising the Cowboys' core secondary with Brandon Carr.
Claiborne, who grew up in Shreveport, LA, and played his college ball at LSU, expressed disappointment that he wouldn't be in the lineup in front of his hometown crowd.
"I was looking forward to last year when they came here and then going back there," Claiborne told ESPN.com's Todd Archer. "I was really looking forward to it, but I ain't going to make it."
In his second season, Claiborne hasn't developed into the Pro Bowl-worthy corner the Cowboys had hoped he would become. He made 23 tackles and only one interception through the first eight games of 2013, as Dallas ranked among the worst pass defenses in football.
Heading into Week 10, the Cowboys are 31st in passing yards allowed per game with 305.2 and tied for 25th with 16 touchdown passes against.
According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), opposing quarterbacks have registered a 97.2 passer rating when throwing Claiborne's way this season. The website's advanced metrics place him 40th among cornerbacks who have played on 50 percent or more of their team's defensive snaps this season.
Claiborne has only developed into a middling tackler as well.
He told Archer he expects to be back in the lineup after the Cowboys' Week 11 bye when they play the New York Giants on Nov. 24.
"I think it'll help a lot, especially the bye week coming up right after that," Claiborne said. "I think the bye week's going to help a lot just in terms of more treatment and doing more stuff to get back on the field."
Dallas (5-4) heads into Sunday with a one-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East.
Led by quarterback Drew Brees, New Orleans (6-2) averages 317.6 yards per game and should have an easy time throwing against the Cowboys' depleted and struggling secondary.
