When asked about Prescott and what he has accomplished thus far, Staubach offered a glowing review as well as optimism for what his future holds, according to ESPN.com's Ian O'Connor:
You can tell that the players respect the heck out of him and that he's already a leader. He is amazing at making decisions when ... there's a difficult situation there and he needs to dump the ball off. He also can throw to lead a receiver. Sometimes he throws the ball a little low, and I don't know if it's intentional, but he's right on the money in allowing his receivers to make tough catches.
He's got something ticking up there, and you know you've got to get rid of the ball pretty quick in the NFL. He makes good, solid decisions. I think we've got a wonderful quarterback for the future.
The fourth-round pick out of Mississippi State has completed a remarkable 69 percent of his passes for 1,239 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions through five games. He has also rushed for 61 yards and accumulated three scores on the ground.
Prescott has started in place of Tony Romo, who suffered a collarbone injury during the preseason. As Romo's return approaches, the whispers of a full-blown quarterback controversy have gotten louder.
Per O'Connor, Staubach isn't sure what the right answer is with regard to starting Prescott or Romo moving forward:
It's still all about winning football games, and Tony deserves to get back in there eventually. We have a great one in Tony and a future great one in Dak. If I was in the atmosphere of the Cowboy locker room, which [head coach] Jason [Garrett] will be, he'll get a sense of what's the right thing for the team. They all like Tony, who's a heck of a football player, but they also love Dak right now and what he's doing. He's got the team behind him.
If they beat Green Bay, there will be a lot of controversy to it. I'm a Romo fan, too, so I don't want to say anything against Tony. But the way Dak's going, it's all about the team and what's the best feel for the team at this particular point.
While Romo has been unable to stay healthy over the past couple of seasons, he was a legitimate MVP candidate in 2014, as he completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 3,705 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions en route to leading the Cowboys to the NFC East title.
Dallas is currently in position to win another division championship under the guidance of Prescott, and it is understandable why there may be some concern about a quarterback change ruining the momentum that has been built.
Both Prescott and Romo have their merits, and Staubach is seemingly of the belief the Cowboys are capable of winning with either of them at the helm.
Provided rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott continues to perform at an elite level, there may not be a right or wrong answer for Garrett.
