The Cowboys are off this weekend. Brad Sham is not.
The "voice of the Cowboys" will be in Arizona on Sunday to call the Rams-Cardinals for Fox.
It will mark Sham's first NFL appearance on Fox. It's an honor long overdue.
"We have admired Brad's work for years," said Bill Brown, Fox's executive vice president for game production. "He is a terrific broadcaster, and if it weren't for his Cowboys commitments, we'd be happy to have him working more NFL on Fox broadcasts."
That's good news for Sham, who points out that with the Cowboys' schedule this season, he has more Sundays off than you might think. Yet to come is a Monday night game against the Giants, a Thanksgiving meeting with the Bucs, a Saturday night at the Falcons and a Christmas Monday game against the Eagles.
Still, just because Sham has a month of Sundays off, that doesn't mean Fox has room for him. The need for announcers fluctuates with the schedule and the number of NFC road games.
But if the call comes, Sham, who worked a game for CBS several years ago, will be ready.
"I'd like to do more television," said Sham, who has worked NFL Europe games for Fox Sports Net and FC Dallas soccer games locally. "Every time I get the opportunity, I am going to pursue it."
In a way, Fox owes Sham. He tutored Troy Aikman and Daryl Johnston, Fox's No. 1 and No. 2 analysts, in their art. He'll work this game with Bill Maas.
Sham, 57, understands that radio is his canvas. He looked for television opportunities after he left the Rangers' radio booth in 1997 and before he rejoined the Cowboys.
"There is an industry bias against age," Sham said. "I was close to 50 ... I was viewed as a little old ... TV wants young."
