IRVING – The season had ended, and in the fog of disappointment, linebacker Bradie James tried to reconcile the harsh reality. Eight seasons have passed since he arrived in Dallas in 2003, and James has yet to win a championship with the Cowboys. He now wonders if he will ever have that opportunity.
"The window is kind of closing," he said. "I'm going into my ninth year. I can remember when I first stepped on campus, actually. So we don't have time. The realization of this game is, we've got to make something happen now or I'm going to retire a non-Super Bowl winner. That's just how it goes."
Before the season, the Cowboys had dreamed of becoming the first host team to play in the Super Bowl. But those hopes were quickly extinguished after a series of calamitous events transpired.
The Cowboys lost seven of their first eight games, quarterback Tony Romo's season ended when he fractured his left clavicle Oct. 25 and head coach Wade Phillips was fired Nov. 8. Although the Cowboys were revived under the direction of interim coach Jason Garrett, they finished 6-10 and didn't approach the goal they expected to achieve.
"You're encouraged because of the way you fought when there wasn't this big prize out there," said tight end Jason Witten. "But at the end we know what the expectations are and the standard. We need to win, and I think the players understand that."
