I think being an NFL commentator is a lot harder than it appears. Sometimes I think too many TV exec’s who hire former NFL players for the TV booth think that a player’s on-field success and popularity translates to the booth.
Some examples of what I mean:
- Jason Witten was a great player and very popular Cowboy. Terrible broadcaster.
- Emmiitt Smith is the all time NFL rushing leader and a great human being. Terrible broadcaster.
- Robert Griffin III was a talented player with an injury shortened career. He was good in the studio shows but IMO not that great in the booth.
- Joe Namath was a HOF QB with a SB ring. IMO he was terrible in the booth.
There are some exceptions of course.
- Dandy Don Meredith was an excellent NFL QB and became an Emmy award winning broadcaster.
- I think HOF er Troy Aikman is very good in the booth. (Makes me laugh when Cowboys fans say he hates the Cowboys when he’s just being fair)
- Merlin Olson was a HOF DL and also became an outstanding booth commentator.
- Probably the greatest NFL TV broadcaster and former player was the great Pat Summerall who was a kicker in the NFL but his broadcasting career exceeded his playing career.
I don’t know what Brady will be like in the booth. I’m certainly going to be tuned in Sunday. If we win Sunday, many Cowboys fans will like him. If we lose Sun, many fans will say he hates the Cowboys and loves the Browns, lol.
