Brandon George: Leary and Weems Signed

They must really have plans for Watson since he hung around so long and they did not just cut him outright.

Surprised they did that, but that's probably insurance if they can't resign Carter/Durant.

Maybe just a replacement for Cam Lawrences...depth either way.

Jarvis Landry and Jordan Mathews were good 2nd round picks last year.

Yes, but one is a true #2 receiver & the other worked out of a Chip Kelly offense. Not saying you're wrong on assessment..... But not entirely apple to apples

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) gets set to throw the controversial fourth-down pass to Dez Bryant, as guard Ronald Leary (65) blocks during the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Green Bay Packers NFL football game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay on Sunday, January 11, 2015. INDIANAPOLIS — Ron Leary has started 31 games for the Cowboys the last two seasons. Darrion Weems has yet to appear in one since joining the team in 2012.

But both offensive linemen, who were exclusive-rights free agents, signed one-year deals with the Cowboys worth $585,000.

Leary, a left guard, has developed into a solid contributor while sandwiched between Pro Bowlers Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick. Since he began playing in 2013, he has allowed 10 sacks and has been a reliable run blocker.

Weems, meanwhile, made an impression on the coaches before he injured his shoulder in training camp and underwent surgery thereafter. He is now one of four offensive tackles on the roster who are under contract.

In another move, the Cowboys reduced the 2015 base salary of linebacker Dekoda Watson from $1.25 million to $745,000.

Yes, it seemed to me that they had plans for him in 2015. They normally wouldn't carry a special teams only guy once he is injured which they did for several games.

He had really good measurables and the Jags gave him a decent contract as a free agent last year.

I like our depth and bottom of the roster guys a lot better than previous years

  1. Born: March 3, 1988 (age 26), Aiken, SC
  2. 40 yard dash time: 4.40 sec (combine) to 4.55 seconds; 100m 11.07sec
  3. Height: 6' 2 to 6-3" (1.88 m)
  4. 240lbs
Didn't know he was from Aiken SC. Played ball for South Aiken SC then Fl St. Fast guy for his size. Better measurables than Carter I think. He might be a good edge rusher or a nickel LB. Not sure what they have in mind for the guy but gotta like his numbers.

I can see Dallas signing Free to a short deal, and and try and develop Wee s like they did Parnell. I also hope the draft another RT to also compete.

Good deal. The development of Leary has been a major feather in the cap for the Cowboys front-office. Glad he is around for at least another year.

Do you get the Draft pick this year or next? I would take a second for Beasley in a heartbeat.

I like what he adds to offense, bu that can be found in FA or late in the Draft.

If Beasley draws a second I would leap all over that too. He isn't irreplaceable.

Dallas is on a role with drafting OL right now. Keep drafting them regardless of what Jerry is doing with OL contracts. Dallas can't pay all 5 OL big contracts. Smith, Frederick, Martin are foundation and will be paid accordingly. I would fill in LG and RT as needed thru draft or middle tier FA.

So, why not sign Leary to a 2-3 year contract? He's good enough to deserve it and it seems like the price would be reasonable if we do it now. I know his knee could end up an issue...but it's also possible it won't be an issue.

I'm waiting on Cole Beasley now, I know he's restricted as well. I could see Belichek giving up a late 2nd for a guy like Beasley. He would do great in that offense and could take over Amendola's role.

Belichek wouldn't give up a 2nd for Beasley. He's too smart for that.
