For comparison purposes, read draft analyst Frank Coyle's writeup about Penn State MLB Josh Hull (former walk-on and fan whipping boy after playing next to Sean Lee and Navorro Bowman):
Now I wonder if Coyle would be so blunt when talking about a more productive and highly regarded college player like Spikes. If nothing else, it shows how shocking a 5.02 40 is for a MLB when it comes to scouts. FWIW, Coyle had Spikes going #20 overall in the 1st round to Houston in his 3/15 mock draft.
BWI: As long as we're talking about the linebackers, what are Hull's prospects for being drafted? Do you see him as more of a free agent?
Coyle: Hull comes in just under 6-3, 237, and did 25 reps, but he ran a 4.98 and 5.02. His lack of athleticism shows here. He can't play on the outside at that speed. His drills weren't bad. His drills were really good, but his 40 time was bad. See, he won't be a nickelback with that kind of speed. Tailbacks would just use him. So, I mean, he's going to have to play probably inside, maybe in a 3-4.
BWI: If he comes out during Pro Day and runs a better 40 in the 4.6-4.7 range, would that immediately bump him up because of those other good numbers?
Coyle: Of course. I mean, he's going to have to run at least a 4.8. You can't run a 5.02. I mean, that's slow. That's undraftable. If he can get 4.8, he's probably draftable. If he gets a sub 4.8, he could figure in the sixth, seventh round. He seems like a nice kid.
