Scout's Eye: Day 8 observations
August, 1, 2010 Aug 18:07AM CTEmail Print Comments By Bryan BroaddusMy thoughts from Saturday’s practice:

*Off days happen even to the best of them.

In the afternoon session, Tony Romo had his worst single practice of camp. Nothing really seemed to be clicking for him. Balls that were usually thrown to receivers and completed were off target. Defensive backs were able to drive on balls and defend them.

In short, Romo didn’t have his pinpoint accuracy that we had seen since camp opened last Saturday. Under pressure, where Romo is normally outstanding, there were balls that were short or skipped to receivers. Touch passes on corner routes were misjudged and delivered too long.

Romo had a terrible interception moving to his right then trying to throw a ball into the middle of the field that Cletis Gordon read and made the play in the end zone.

There was a play where the ball was thrown so poorly that the first thing that popped into my mind was, Jon Kitna had to throw it, but no, standing in the middle of the field was Tony Romo.

The problem with all this to me, was that the offense was working on red zone situations, which is the very area that there were struggles in 2009. In the offseason we were told that special attention would be paid by all parties on offense to correct what needed to be done in the red zone to improve.

Romo’s play Saturday was not a step in the right direction.

*As the Hall of Fame Game is just a week away, my prediction for the Cowboys’ preseason leading rusher will be Herb Donaldson.

With his running style and the quickness he shows, Donaldson will be the favorite of Jason Garrett to hand the ball to run out the clock. At 5-foot-11, 211 pounds, he is not a small man but his balance and movement is like that of a much smaller back.

Donaldson has a knack for getting the ball to the corner or he can bang it inside which he has done in 9-on-7 drills. He is a slippery runner that you think is stopped but he keeps moving forward. He makes a nice effort to try and finish runs.

Donaldson will not make this team because the quality and the numbers at his position, but that will not stop him from having a productive camp and potentially playing for a job on another squad.

*Secondary coach Dave Campo wants Alan Ball to totally concentrate on being the starting the safety and not worry about working to try to be the fourth corner as well. That’s a wise move.

Ball has had a productive camp in the way that he has been able to play with range from his free safety spot.

The preseason games will most likely determine who that fourth corner is, but from what I viewed Saturday, Cletis Gordon appears to be that man over rookies Jamar Wall and Bryan McCann. Gordon’s advantage going into camp was that he was with the team in 2009 and had played for Wade Phillips before.

Earlier in my thoughts, I spoke of the interception he was able to secure off Romo in the red zone by not dropping coverage in the end zone, staying with his man, then driving on the ball. Not just Saturday but overall, Gordon has played with a nose for the ball where Wall and McCann have had their mistakes, which will happen to rookies from time to time.

The most important thing in all of this is that the Cowboys find someone that allows Ball just to be a safety and right now Gordon would get my nod.

Based on what I've seen so far, I'm feeling better about the 4th CB. One of the three ought to be able to perform. Both of these rookies are doing better than the two CB's we drafted last year who were regularly beaten during camp.

Romo’s play Saturday was not a step in the right direction.

Meh. That's why they practice these things over and over again (regardless of what Jerry may think about overworking the players). I believe Tony was working with the second team receivers. It makes a big difference if receivers aren't running the right routes....a la Roy Williams since he got here.

Stop blamming everyone else when Romo has a bad day. he is not perfect. if you are going to play golf most of the offseason. you got to take the heat when things go bad. it,s the way it is.

I know! He should have been out there practicing w/ the rest of the team in April!

Take heat from dumb people, you mean. Sadly, yes.

I sincerely doubt anyone sensible is concerned about the QB having an off day at a TC practice.

As camp presses on, the one defensive back that doesn't look like he has tired legs is safety Alan Ball. He looks quick in these drills. [via Twitter]

Ball's going to be a good player for us this year.

Maybe the problem is that he's been so busy practicing that he hasn't had a day to relax and to go and do something like.....play golf? All work and no play makes Tony a dull boy?:)

And no, I'm not going to blame Tony in any way, shape or form for one practice where he's off.......

Ball is a young Ken Hamlin. he may be able to keep people from getting deep. but he is not a playmaker. in 4 games last year he made 2 plays. knocking the deep pass down against the Saints. and the big hit in Kansas city when you got a flag.

I tend to give him a break there, it was his first time ever playing FS regularly...he's spent all offseason learning the nuances of the position and has had all the reps at FS...we dont need him to be Ed Reed (though that would be great) and the odds are he'll be at least as good as Hamlin was, who did next to nothing for the last two seasons.

I agree! I love that Tony is great at golf! He's been doing great at training camp. He just had one off day. I don't think golf is to blame. I was pulling for him in those tournaments!

.

This is the worst part of the article IMO, if Tony goes down for a good stretch, season over.:bang2:

Whatever he is, he's not a Ken Hamlin. He's got much better range and isn't the hitter Hamlin was at his best.

Either way, the games he played stepping in when Hamlin was injured only proved he can play well at this level. It's not nearly the same thing as coming out of camp with the starting job. With the benefit of a starter's preparation and coaching, and the experience he'll get playing the position, and with the leads this team should be playing with, the fact that we've got additional coverage ability in the secondary is going to pay off big time for us this year.

This guy is really becoming more and more difficult to read.

Romo didn't have a difficult Saturday afternoon practice. He had a few really amazing throws -- one he fit the ball between a corner/safety and a linebacker into the back corner of the endzone. It was one of those, how the **** did he just do that plays.

The issue seemed to be more that the receivers were either running the wrong route (or, possibly, Tony was throwing the wrong route) or they were dropping passes. Also, in practice, Tony almost never throws the ball away -- why would he? So, even if a guy is blanketed, sometimes he'll just throw it anyway for the heck of it. The problem was that the receivers were being blanketed in that practice, it looked too much like there was no where to go with the ball. But like I said, in those situations in practice, he's not going to throw the ball away.

If they have confidence in Donaldson, maybe they'll pull the string on trading Choice to Denver if the offer is good enough.
