Breaking down the top corners!

Hill was overrated (I was on record about it) and he didn't do anything this year so I don't get the reference
Hill should get a starting role this year with Bell and Bates both being free agents. I still think he’s a player in the league for a good while

Yea I heard that all last off-season and I still didn't see the hype. He played 14 percent of Def snaps and didn't log a single Stat besides tackles. Not even a pass breakup. He may turn into something but so far he looks like what I thought.
What do you think of Branch?

Better version of Donovan Wilson and yall know how I feel about Dono. I doubt we draft him though.

DJ turner if he measures around 5'11 should be on our radar round 1. I'm sure nobody will agree since experts haven't said it yet.......but they will later

I actually like Turner a good bit… but he’s going to be too short for this defensive coaching staff.

I also really like Phillips out of Utah. He is a dog and does everything well, including get INT’s. Buuuut… he’s going to be too short.

It is hard to argue with Quinn (and McClay) because they’ve done a good job getting players for their defense, but there are times when I might would bend the height rules at DB.

Getting Bland in the 5th was a miracle. That guy is a very good player and he was from the first day of training camp.

I have been talking about Witherspoon for a while now. I absolutely love that kid’s game. His mental make-up is exactly what you want in a NFL corner. His length is ok but he is a tad light.

I have been watching him during the season and hoping that Dallas could get him with their first round pick, but he played so well that he is likely going to be the first CB off the board. Physically, he isn’t the best prospect, but if you watch him play football, it is easy to see that he’s the best in this draft. I very much think he is going to be a great player. It is a shame because he would be perfect opposite Diggs.

He’s smart, aggressive, tough, and just a nightmare for WR’s. His ability to click and close is as good as any player that I’ve seen. It is instantaneous, which makes him ideal playing zone. He is just as good in man coverage though… he’s like a pit bull with those WR’s. He is a dog… He’s just a really, really good football player.

I like Gonzales a lot too. He doesn’t play CB as well as Witherspoon, but he’s physically more talented. He is probably Quinn’s prototypical CB prospect. He does have some ball skills and has plenty of room to grow and learn. The problem with him is that he too, will likely be gone before Dallas picks.

Porter, is also the Quinn prototype but he isn’t as good of a player as Gonzales, and certainly Witherspoon. I would trust Quinn to coach him up, because he has the physical tools for sure, but I don’t love his game right now. He is a pretty distant 3rd for me, behind Witherspoon and Gonzales. However, there’s a good chance that he is also gone before pick 26.

Ringo, I’m not crazy about either, but like Porter, Dallas will love his Physical tools. He might be there at Dallas’ pick but he too could be gone. If Quinn could work some magic with him, he could be very good… but he’s not that right now.

Branch is a guy that I really like. He is more of a safety though, but he is a good football player and is tough as Nails. he’s smart as hell and just super reliable. I don’t know if Dallas would take him needing corners, but I’d love to give him to Quinn to use how he wants. I love the guy.

Phillips is also a good player, and like Witherspoon, he’s a dog. However, physically he is just way shorter than either Dallas or Quinn wants. I understand wanting length I guess, but this guy has everything else. Dallas probably isn’t interested though.

Smith is not a bad prospect but he has some tools to work with, but not tools like Porter/Gonzales/Ringo.

Finally, Forbes is a guy that I like. His ability to play zone and man are pretty good already, and he can get you some turnovers. He is a ball-magnet. He definitely isn’t a great tackler but he gives you everything else and I like him. I just don’t like his tackling.
Quality write up. I’m higher on Porter than you are but a good assessment. I guess Bland is really the wildcard. Definitely seems like a better fit in the slot. But maybe they think he can develop into a quality guy on the outside. We don’t have to take a CB in round 1. But if they think they need a starter they can’t sit and wait til their slotted in round 2.

I swear, I might would just go Branch at 26 before Ringo or Smith. Play him in the slot, on the back end… just about anywhere. At least that way, you’re guaranteed to get a damn good football player. A guy who is smart, tough, physical and wants to play the right way.

He isn’t an outside guy, but if you think Bland will be able to play outside, Branch would be a really nice addition to the defense. He can do so much. He doesn’t miss tackles, he plays a physical brand of football, and he’s just so smart. He would hit the ground running as a rookie.

I like him a whole lot.

He’s a good player, just hard for me to take a SS that can play some slot in the 1st due to positional value. Would much rather draft a natural outside CB.

Love him in the second.

I think at this point, Gonzalez, Porter, and the Spoon are pipe dreams. I don’t envision any of them dropping. Their workouts and tape will just confirm what everyone suspects. Ringo is a kid to watch. Physically as impressive as anyone in the class. Huge upside, but had his struggles especially against Tennessee and others.
You have to ask is this kid worthy of the 26th pick vs taking the No.1 guard, TE or even RB? In other words, can you get a similar talented CB in the 2nd round and use 26 on a higher-quality player at another position?

The only reason he MIGHT work in Dallas is our pass rush. If he goes to a team with no rush he's done.

i think this team drafts players with traits. And Ringo has traits in spades. Freakish size/speed athlete. With that said, some of his tape is less than kind. There are a bunch of guys I’d rather have. Not at the positions you mentioned, but I think we could do better.

Yeah, that is the issue with Branch. I just think he’s going to be so good and I feel like I’d rather take him at 26 than a guy who will just be a big ol’ question mark.

But I’m sure the team will view it similarly to the way you do, for good reason.

And really, the team has been so good drafting that I’ll trust them and their scouting.

Plus, it is so early in the draft process that we really don’t know who is going to be rated where when they’ve had the combine / Pro Days and the draft finally does roll around. I might feel differently about a couple of these CB’s. It is still awfully early.

Forbes has crazy, crazy, ball skills but the dude is Diggs 2.0 when it comes to tackling.

I cant have two CBs that dont want to tackle, just cant do it..........................so, hard pass on Forbes

I don't think size matters to both Quinn/McClay, but elite length is a requirement. We can safely assume any corner with lack of length can be eliminated from being a possible pick.

I think we need to ask ourselves what type of corner is needed? Slot? Outside? One who can cover the big receiver? Cover the speed guy.

Before the injury to Brown, he was having a hard time dealing with over the top speed and locating the football in the air. He was giving up a lot of big plays down the field. Green Bay game comes to mind. We already have Diggs who is better at handling the so called big receiver, but we need that elite speed guy who is go at finding the football. Now who fits that the best? That's what we need to figure out!

At this point impossible to guess who might be there. I like Porter but he’s not the best prospect. Just my best based on who I’m guessing will b by e there.
We need the top CB to release a picture in a gas mask the night before the draft lol

I would love to get Witherspoon and Drew Sanders (LB from Ark). They are really growing on me after reading info on them. I don't thin either will be there when we pick in the their repective rounds that I would want them (1st, 2nd).

Don't sleep on Deonte Banks....

Outside of DT, corner appears to be the team's #1 defensive need. Brown is a fa, both Joseph/Wright have failed to live up to their draft status, Bland was the team's best value pick last year and will be a starter either in the slot or on the outside. There is a need for another starter. Let's keep in mind, Quinn loves size/length as does Will McClay. Here is a list of some of the top corners:

-Christian Gonzalez Oregon-have heard Talib comparisons. 1 yr of elite production, elite speed for the position.
-Jerry Porter Jr. Penn State-he will probably be the team's #1 cb on their board due to size/length.
-Devon Whitherspoon Illinois-has all the elite traits you seek, but his frame is a little light at 180.

-Brain Branch Alabama-reminds me of Dax Hill from last year, he can play any secondary spot.
-Cam Smith South Carolina-like all that come from here, a bit grabby, but can play both on the outside and as a nickel.
-Kelee Ringo Georgia-his physical traits will have the Cowboys interested.
-Clark Phillips III Utah-on the smaller side
-Emmanual Forbes Miss State-people who want Diggs gone, he is a very similar player: crazy ball skills but a liability as a tackler.

This is just an early, pre-combine list, as there will be others who will emerge and rankings will change, at this juncture, the top 3 seem to be out of reach, but you never know.

Quinn was in Dallas when they drafed:
Kelvin Joseph
5'11-1/2, 197
arm length: 31-7/8"

i.e. Joseph not tall or long armed.

I think they were OK with him because he ran a 4.35 forty.

Side Note: Joey Porter is going to be in 9 or 10 mocks on CZ...

My impression is the Quinn likes to have 1 big physical CB and 1 really fast CB.
