From that ute cowboy (@tjacobson0824): How concerning is the Cowboys’ WR situation to start the season in your opinion?

Well, with Michael Gallup and James Washington both coming back from injury, and Amari Cooper gone, there’s no question the onus is going to be on CeeDee Lamb to take a major step forward in his third year as a pro. And part of that will probably have to mean being halfway decent around him which, obviously, will be more difficult with Washington and Gallup on the shelf, presuming neither is out there for Week 1.

So who would I keep an eye on? Noah Brown’s taken advantage of his opportunities in camp, has lost some weight and, going into his sixth year, looks like he really knows what he’s doing out there. Then, there’s Simi Fehoko, who is big enough, and deployed in a certain way, that I actually thought he’d been playing tight end when I talked to Cowboys people about him after Tuesday’s practice. The reality is he’s very much like a hybrid in how they use him, which gives the staff another option.

And then there’s the reality here that when you pay your quarterback at the top of the market, you’ll probably eventually have times when you’re asking him to make the difference for some sort of deficiency you have. No question, to some degree, early in the season, it’ll be on Dak Prescott to do that for Dallas.

So who do they keep on the roster pending Gallup/Washington return? Both of those guys need to be on the initial 53, if they want to move them to the IR and bring them back later in the season. Houston has impressed, Fehoko had versatility and Vasher has size you cannot teach. But not all those guys can be on the 53.

It's a good chance to give these young guys some game experience. The game won't be too big for at least one of them. Training camp is one thing but who will shine in real games?

This group of WRs is better than what we had after we traded for Cooper. Amari thrived with little help. CD will too, if he's a #1 receiver.

Gallup will just stay on PUP to start the season, no need to move too IR.
Washington yes, he would need to be on the initial 53.

Ahhh that’s explains him talking about Simi as.a TE in his camp points article. Thought that’s what he may have been referring to in terms of Fehoko being used a certain way.

Need the insiders to expand on this though this is the first time I’m hearing this explicitly.

Breer's right: Dak has to earn that salary and help make something out of these down roster WRs. In the meantime, he has a dynamic WR1, a talented rookie and one of the more productive TEs in the league to work with, not to mention Zeke and Pollard out of the backfield. He should be able to do something with this at $40M per.

To be honest, Simi has talked about it a bit also. He mentioned during OTAs the coaching staff was looking at some TE packages for him.

Maybe an injury settlement with Washington before the season starts? I mean we may need his spot on the 53.
I questioned him making to roster, and with two injuries already you could be right.

So is this why BigMike was telling Simi to bulk up beginning of off-season? If Simiis playing a hybrid position what are the guys covering this team doing instead of telling us this?

The money has nothing to do with it. I mean c'mon man. If the Oline is doing well, it will make everyone's job easier. Let's hope the trenches are in tact.

Way too many question marks at the WR position… a smart FO would make a move to acquire some additional talent. Even when Gallup and Washington return— they will need some time to get back into game shape.

Even if they were 100% healthy— we are operating with less talent at the position overall. This just seems like an unaddressed achilles heel that we will more than likely be pointing to after the 2022 campaign as a key reason we took a step back

roster juggling is its own science but they can go long at WR, then re-add someone like Rico Dowdle.

Dak got Randall Cobb, Cole Beasly and Ced Wilson very well paid.
So he has already been doing this.
What he couldn't do was make Allen Hurns a WR1 but neither could Tom Brady.

Yeah he mentioned that last offseason during the exit interview but I hadn’t seen anyone specifically mention him being used as a TE hybrid In camp.

Feel like I’m pretty plugged into the TC talk but may have missed it for sure.

Listened to a discussion yesterday with Broaddus about Fehoko. Broaddus claimed Fehoko and Miles Austin are similar players. Both of the receivers are more straight line. But Fehoko seems to have a little more curve or wiggle in his routes. Broaddus stated Fehoko has better hands and is a bit faster than Austin.

Broaddus also thinks Noah Brown will step up this season.

Take this as you will.

I don't care about his salary but whatever the o line will be able to produce, I expect him to find solutions. Scramble like hell, use all your options, run like in your rookie year...

If you're the bus driver then you'll play as good as your o line let's you, if you're top 5 you make something happen every now and then despite the odds. A not so good o line will probably invite teams to blitz more, use that against them. We looked good in that department last year.
