Brees, Saints Agree On New Deal

Good thing he was a plaintiff in the litigation or he might be starving.

Similar to the money that Manning got -- guarantee would be similar too but the Broncos have an out if Manning is hurt (Manning is guaranteed almost 60 mill in total if he is on the roster in 2013 -- i.e., if he returns to form). Brees gets about the same guarantee.

That's a market-value deal. I don't see why that took them so long

40 Million in year 1?! I wonder what the most money a player has made in one year is. That has to be close to it.

Haynesworth made 41 mill on his signing bonus, so his first year pay was higher

Mannning's 2004 contract had like a 35 mill SB so he was likely close too.

The only difference here is the structure where they are tossing so much of the money into Year 1.

Well there ya go Drew. You're good. Are you that good??? Lost Carl Nicks to TB, but your F.O. got you Ben Grubbs to replace him with. That swap alone saved the Saints about $2.5M a year to put in your pocket. Hope it works out.

Hard to know where the line should be drawn between taking all you can get and giving a home team discount — leaving some on the table for best quality teammate retention and acquisition. Or is that all just a bunch of nonsense... something teams try to sell players on to save themselves money? IDK. Not judging.

Looking at it pragmatically, Tom Benson and the other NFL team owners are billionaires; it's their money to spend how they choose. If Benson isn't worried about it, why should I care?

The Saints without Payton, Vilma, and Brees would have won 3 games. This was an absolute must for Benson.

In other news:

Upon learning of Brees' new contract, former Defensive Coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, now indefinitely suspended from the NFL, Gregg Williams, was said to have murmured, "I will coach again!"

$40 mil in one year. When will their cap space be removed?

That was misreported -- it is a 37 mill SB with a 3 mill base contract

I used to be a fan of Brees until last offseason and this offseason. He sounds like a guy just out to get his. And the constant denying of anything going regarding the bounty is pretty annoying, and acting like the NFL is just picking on them and out to get the Saints.

I hope they have a losing season.

So his cap number is about 10.5M?

Sounds right. Since he had that franchise tender, this is going to save cap space. He's got a 20 mill or so base in 2013, but clearly that's going to get converted to bonus too. So they likely end up with about a 15 mill cap hit in 2013.

This isn't much different than the Manning deal (save for the Broncos having an out at the end of the year). So I'm not really seeing what the hold up was here.

Yeah, what a jerk.

His Drew Brees foundation has ONLY committed 11 million to charity.

What a complete jack ***.

Whatever amount it is, it is a ton more than 99% of the players in the league do with their money.

We need more guys in the league who are truly committed to charity like this. It is nice that some players go and visit sick kids and stuff, but Brees is making a real financial commitment.

You'd have to be a moron to criticize that (oh wait, I just saw whose post I was replying to -- it all makes sense now).

@drewbrees, #Saints reach agreement on 5 yr, $100-mill deal, including $40 mill in year 1; $60 mill guaranteed in 1st 3 yr. More on #ESPN

Many Saints fans are saying Brees' contract is frontloaded in 2012 because they don't expect to win much this year with all the suspensions due to the bounty mess. Their theory is this will save cap space in future years when everyone is back in the house and they are ready to do business again.

Question: isn't frontloading a contract the same thing the Cowboys and Commanders got penalized for doing (in an uncapped year) ??

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but I don't understand the whole capology stuff...figured someone here would have the answer to this question.
