Posted from the NC Tarheel Board on Scout talking about Brian Baker switching from DL Coach at NC to DL for the Dallas Cowboys. In my opinion anytime someone goes from a positional Coach at the College Level to positional Coach for an NFL Team people have got to realize usually this is called a "PROMOTION". Usually there is a few more dollars involved and much more prestige. I just think it's funny that someone and so many people make a big deal out of a guy bettering himself. Of course there's no Sour Grapes

Morally & Ethically Wrong

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that it’s official, I’ve got no problem calling this move by Baker morally and ethically WRONG. And this is not sour grapes. In fact, it’s not about us at all. It’s about the coaching culture and our society. I don’t care if he was offered a job coaching the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. It’s not ok to even entertain an offer, no matter how enticing, once you’ve made a written or oral commitment to another.

It’s really disappointing to repeatedly witness decisions like this made by college coaches, pro coaches, and men in general. We, as men, are supposed to be setting a good example for our own kids and for the kids of others. We’re supposed to be teaching them about being men and women. How many times have we heard our players and those on other teams talk about a coach being like a second father or like the father they never had? How can we expect our student-athletes to make sound responsible decisions during their four or five-year college careers when their coaches are placing career and money above ethics? How can we possibly expect seventeen and eighteen-year-old kids to honor their verbal commitments when they see adult men ignoring similar commitments daily?

Boy would it have been refreshing to see Baker come out and say that he is turning down a prestigious pro job and Jerry Jones’ money because honoring a prior commitment is the right thing to do. I can guarantee that our student-athletes would have taken notice. Our society would have taken notice.

I don't blame NC fans or media for being upset or having sour grapes. He was hired Jan. 10, 2011 at NC and now he is gone. Just as some had sour grapes over Nick Saban. I'm sure if the shoe was on the other foot we would be upset if a guy we hired left before even 1 season

I can see being disappointed but not sour grapes like that. This has been how sports has been forever. Coaches leave, sometimes it's because the team is trying to better themselves and sometimes it's the coach trying to better himself.

I agree but normally you don't see a coach sign in Jan and leave in Feb of the same year. I'm happy for Dallas that they got him but I can understand their feelings right now.

The only problem i have with this is that its a DL coach. a Position coach. Not a head coach, not a coordinator, not a huge part of the coaching tree. So seriously what’s the big deal.

It is sour grapes and he damn well knows it.

Now, if he would have just up and left in the middle of the season or as the season was ramping up. He would have an argument. This man is upgrading his life by moving on and they are just pissed off that he isn't staying with them.

If you were working at a job and got offered a better job in a different department or even whole different company, do you think you should not take it because someone at your current job thinks you should stay? HELL NO!

Why does the fact that it's a position make a big deal? He is moving from the college ranks to the pros. Lots of coaches move this way.

.....the man is a PRO coach and is looking out for his family by making more money here, just like the OP would do if given the opportunity. Case CLOSED. No one cares about UNC but Heel fans and alums. ***NOT-ALLOWED*** Tar Heels!;)

and if happened here I have no doubt many would go off on him. It is easy to say when it is happening to someone else.

What if you took a job that wasn't your ideal but it was the best you could find and a month later the ideal job is offered. You going to turn it down? I don't think anyone in their right mind would or expect anyone else not to.

I understand his reason he did it to benifet himself and if a coach did that to us many of you would be going off on him. I'm glad he is here but I'm not going to sit here and fault those who back NC for being upset.

I'm not faulting him he did what was in his best interest. If you dump a girl I'm sure you had your reason does that mean she is not going to be upset?

I know you weren't necessarily against it. I'm just trying to put it in perspective for people that do have a problem with it.
