If the combine test shows Cushing steroids free, that should resolve this issue, this whisper turned into rumor turned into questions. He is not the first player at the combine to endure such scrutiny. He will not be the last.

It is out there. It has stuck.

An NFL general manager, requesting anonymity, said: "We’ve been warned it is an issue and might have been one since high school. We are considering that. As unpleasant as it is, this is an issue with this player that only a negative test here is going to clear up right now. It’s unfortunate, because no one wants to kill the kid, but the issue is a reality."


And a 30-year NFL scout added: "If I were to look at the entire 300-plus group of players here and ask myself based on my knowledge of steroids which one of these players is the prime prospect to have used it, he would be it. He has the physique and other attributes that indicate it. But he is fortunate. Unlike other sports, we test strongly for it. And if he passes that test, so be it. He gets a clean slate with us."

Brian Cushing suspended four games

The reigning NFL defensive rookie of the year will miss the first four weeks of the 2010 season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Texans linebacker Brian Cushing is being suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on steroids and related substances.

Per Schefter, Cushing appealed the suspension during the scouting combine in February but was told today that he will be suspended. He can participate in training camp and the preseason but will have to sit out Weeks 1-4 of the regular season.

It's the second time in the last five years that the reigning defensive rookie of the year has been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs; Shawne Merriman won the award in 2005 and was suspended in 2006. Although Merriman was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season, a rule passed in response to Merriman's Pro Bowl selection prohibits players suspended during the regular season from being selected to the Pro Bowl.

So Cushing, who was selected to the Pro Bowl after 2009, won't be a Pro Bowler next season.

Cushing started all 16 games for the Texans after being chosen in the first round of the 2009 draft. Prior to the draft Cushing was the subject of a false report that he had tested positive for steroids at the 2009 scouting combine.

UPDATE: Steve Wyche of NFL Network has confirmed the report. ESPN's Michael Smith points out that Julius Peppers was suspended during his Rookie of the Year campaign, so this has happened three times in eight years. Yikes.
