Im sorry if this has already been discussed, I am just wondering what you all think about this. He has the speed and the size, why havent they tried him there? I mean, its not like we would be losing anything, Bease just fair catches, and Whitehead they dont seem to trust anyways. Thoughts?

He's a fast long strider not a quick change of direction guy. The new RB they got from the Commanders might be better
for punts. I kind of agree that Brice might work for kickoffs though how many are brought out these days.

Has he ever returned punts in college or the NFL?

The #1 issue in PR is handling the ball cleanly. If a player didn't do it in college, it's rare for them to do it in the NFL, especially without a lot of preseason reps doing it.

I expect Whitehead to eventually get some chances on PR. I think they wanted to get him acclimated to the NFL before throwing him out there on PR. Having him on KR should help to get him ready for the pressure of PR.

The Niners tried throwing the Rugby player into PR as a rookie and he had 3 fumbles on just a few returns. They probably should have eased him into it. Putting him on KR first would likely have helped him get acclimated to handling the ball and holding on to it. They might have ruined him in terms of ever being a PR in the future because once a player gets apprehensive about handling the ball, it's hard to overcome it.

Butler would not be a good punt returner because he would never fair catch a punt and would try to bring it back. Were better off with a guy like Beasley that just fair catches punts.
