It wouldn't surprise me if someone says SHAZAM! :p

Brie Larson is 'Captain Marvel'

(CNN) - Marvel has made it official: Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel in the studio's first female-led film.

Marvel made the announcement Saturday night during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Shortly after, Larson herself tweeted, "Call me Captain Marvel."

Larson has been rumored to be taking the part since June. The superheroine role will mark quite a change for the indie darling actress, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of a woman held captive with her young son in 2015's "Room."

It wasn't always clear the film would center on a female iteration of the Captain Marvel character -- an Air Force officer who acquires superpowers. Then in 2014, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige put speculation to rest at a publicity event when he said "I want to make it very clear: This hero's name is Carol Danvers."

The standalone Captain Marvel film is being planned for the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is currently set to debut in March 2019.

An old foggy like me still remembers the original Captain Marvel. I still think his uniform was one of the best ever designed regardless of whichever comics company. "Wielder of the Cosmic Nega-Bands!" He was really under-appreciated by readers (and the court fight over ownership of the character's name didn't do him any favors either). sigh. I'm getting old.

I assume its because its the only movies making money and once you're in you're in for life damn near, easy money
Right. How many movies has Samuel L Jackson been in? How much money has he made off those movies?

As said, they make money. And some people like 'em.

'I don't understand why all these folks spend billions of dollars on this silly game of pumped up pee wee football.'
Understand?

A lot more than "some people" like them.

I love Brie Larson, but don't know a damned thing about Captain Marvel. Marvel has been on a hot streak though, I trust they know what they're doing.

She's fantastic. I saw "The Room" a few months ago and it just blew me away.

And just like you, I don't have the first clue about Captain Marvel, but they made a great choice with her.

Why they are doing this? Simple for the money and publicity.

Also it may just be cool...?

As an actor... If Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Robert Downey Jr., Natalie Portman, ROBERT FREAKING REDFORD, MICHAEL FREAKING DOUGLAS, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, TOMMY LEE FREAKING JONES, Jeff Bridges, Edward Norton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Idris Elba, Gwenyth Paltrow, William Hurt, ANTHONY HOPKINS, Zoe Saldana, GLENN FREAKING CLOSE, John C. Reilly, Ben Kingsley, James Spader, Guy Pierce, Stanley Tucci, Benicio Del Toro, and Samuel L. Mothereffin' Jackson are in and you're not...

...Are you even cool?

Seems like If you're not trying to get in, you're not really with the in crowd right now.

I've left off so many others too.

Good choice. She was great in Room and Short Term 12.

I wonder how/if they'll deal with the big part of the character's history. The character spent 20 years suffering from PTSD due to that event. She doesn't have much story to pull from the comics outside of that and much of it is tied to the X-Men, which are licensed to another studio. There's no *ahem* rogues gallery to pull from for a story. I guess there are other villains who can do the same thing. In any case, that kind of story was essentially Jessica Jones.

Also, her origin is derived from the original Captain Marvel. Maybe they'll co-opt his origin as her's or maybe he'll be in the movie too. Or maybe they just jump in without an origin.

They need to reboot Silver Surfer. Maybe do something with all of Galactus's Heralds.

Unfortunately, Fox owns the rights to Silver Surfer.

I don't see any possible chance they could do him justice. Someone would basically have to create the space for Fox to stay out of the creative process like what happened with Deadpool.

I don't think they'll skip the origin story, that's usually the easiest story to tell. Likely she'll show up in some Marvel movies before they get there though.

I doubt that route will be taken. It's been many moons since I bought comics on a weekly basis. Back in the day, Carol Danvers got her start as Ms. Marvel, with powers absorbed from Captain Marvel. Marvel Comics got away from that story long ago.

In my opinion, this incarnation will be a big revision of the original story--much like how Marvel reimagined the Guardians of the Galaxy. There's the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series foundation to consider as well. They've already have the ball rolling with storyline focusing on the Inhumans , who were created by the Kree.

The original Danvers' start as a superhero was an accident due to Kree technology. I think they will cut out the original Captain Marvel this time around, start from scratch, and debut the character as a direct or indirect Kree creation, who is transformed by some Inhuman intervention.

I can also see Marvel/Disney centering on Danvers human backstory. That would tie her origin with Logan/Wolverine and her time in secret intelligence--including with SHIELD. I say this thinking Marvel/Disney may eventually wrestle (at least) some of the X-Men franchise copyright away from 20th Century Fox--much like they did with Sony and Spider-Man. Even though there is the Marvel/Disney Infinity storyline to consider and whatever part Captain Marvel will play in it, there is a lot of time between now and 2019 for the studios to beat out some sort of compromise.
