I'm pretty sure he's on an expiring contract by standards. As a rule, head coaches signs contracts for 5 years, coordinators for 3 years and position coaches for 2-3 years. This ( read years ago by former NFL GM ) gives the head coach flexibility with his staff. Now, this of course doesn't mean their contracts are quietly extended, especially position coaches, w/o a media release. He signed with the Browns in January 2020. See the Cowboys extension with Kellen Moore below for reference.

Cleveland Browns rumors: Bears making a run at o-line coach Bill Callahan

by Nick Dudukovich11 months ago

They say build through the trenches, and that’s what it looks like new Bears coach Matt Eberflus is trying to do, at the cost of the Cleveland Browns.

Eberflus is reportedly trying to lure offensive line coach Bill Callahan out of Cleveland, according to veteran Bears’ writer Erik Lambert, of SportsMockery.com.

Lambert correctly noted that if Ebeflus was able to pull this off, it would amount to “Highway Robbery” and he’s right.

Callahan has been instrumental to the offensive line ever since taking the job under Kevin Stefanski. He was widely credited with successfully employing the zone-blocking scheme during the Covid-crazy year of 2020, which saw the Browns get to the playoffs.

Dallas Cowboys[edit]

The Dallas Cowboys hired Callahan as their offensive line coach during the 2012 offseason. On June 4, 2013, Dallas owner Jerry Jones announced that Callahan would call plays on offense during the upcoming 2013 season, allowing head coach Jason Garrett to focus on game management.[35] After being the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys during the 2013 season, he was stripped of his play-calling duties. During the 2014 off-season, the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens both asked Dallas for permission to interview Callahan for their open offensive coordinator positions, but Dallas declined.[36] Dallas let Callahan's contract as offensive line coach expire after the 2014-2015 season, allowing him to seek other opportunities.[37] At the time, Callahan was considered among the best offensive line coaches in the NFL, and some considered him to be the leading reason behind the success of the Dallas Cowboys offensive line, which had 3 linemen (Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and Travis Frederick) named to the 2014 All-Pro Team.[38]

For the record by the standards mentioned above, Philpin could also be on an expiring contract.

Two things here:

1. I agree with those saying Callahan would never work for Jones again. Something else we can ‘thank’ Jason Garrett for.

2. Under the circumstances, I think Philbin has done a very good job. And if McCarthy stays, he will likely stay as well.

Bringing back Callahan has been a dream of mine since his departure.. Jerry's refusal to let him out of his contract for a lateral coaching job with another team pretty much guarantees we'll never see him on the Cowboys' sideline ever again.

If I remember correctly, there was a little more to the story. I think Callahan was “demoted” in that he lost play calling duties and maybe other offensive coaching duties. Callahan then wanted to leave but Jerry wouldn’t let him. I’m guessing there was a bit more even behind closed doors.

I think the ownership already burned bridges with him as he wanted to call plays and they denied that request. He left quickly after that and headed to Washington. He is the best in the business, but Philbin has done an excellent job. Look at what he did with Steele and Tyler.

Yeah, I think the whole notion that he'd ever come back is not going to happen because of Garrett.

Philbin has not done a bad job. Almost every young OL has improved. Biadasz is much better. Steele has become a very good RT. McGovern has held up when he has played. Farniok was respectable when called up. And Smith has had a pretty good year at LT with all things considered. Philbin's biggest sin may have been not getting Conner Williams to play to a high level.

That being said, I'd have no problems with Callahan coming back. Just don't see it ever happening.

Jerry ran off two hall of fame coaches. I can't see how anyone would want to work for him. Unless all you are after is a pay check.

Dallas Cowboys HC job is one of the most highly recognized positions in the world of sports. So I disagree, coaches would work for Jerry and not just for the paycheck, that takes care of itself.
He ran off no coaches.

I wouldnt mess with the O-line coaching we have, wether it be Philbin or MM, name me the last time Tyron went down for many games and we didnt get rocked every game. The OL has backups who can play thats not something we have had in a long time.

Jimmy wanted to leave.
The relationship soured the more Jerry's ego showed up and my opinion is that is what caused Jimmy to mail it in sooner than expected. Jimmy gets a bad rap for leaving, but it is undeserved. He had enough of Jerry and it was time to move on.
Tuna quit.
I think Bill was fine until Jerry forced T.O. on him back in 2006. Bill was very vocal in his dislike for Owens but Jerry signed him anyway. Bill left at the end of that season, so what do you think brought on the premature resignation?

If Sean Payton somehow agrees to coach in Dallas I will believe what you say about the job being "one of the most highly recognized positions in the world of sports". Otherwise, I will maintain my belief this franchise will never see another Landry, Johnson, or Parcels as long as Jerry is still doing his thing.
