He's good in short stints but there is a reason he doesn't get locked up long term often. He's like the Bill parcels of OL coaches. very hard and rough which is good for about 2-3 years then it just wears this with those who work with him.

I was tough on Philbin for awhile, but to give him credit, he has done a really good job this year with the musical chairs we've had at Oline.

If I remember correctly, there was a little more to the story. I think Callahan was “demoted” in that he lost play calling duties and maybe other offensive coaching duties. Callahan then wanted to leave but Jerry wouldn’t let him. I’m guessing there was a bit more even behind closed doors.
He wanted to be OC, not just running game coordinator. I believe Scott Linehan was the passing game coordinator, but I don't remember if it was Linehan or Garrett that was calling the plays.

In the end I think we can say Jerry made a mess of things as far as who was doing what on the offense. I imagine Garrett takes some of the blames as well.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Callahan came back, though, not that it is in consideration. Guys always seem to want to come back despite how they left. From Dez to TO to Beasley, it seems the disgruntled are usually willing to put things aside for the paycheck.

Suggesting we bring back Callahan shows your lack of understanding of why he's gone. ;)

Two things here:

1. I agree with those saying Callahan would never work for Jones again. Something else we can ‘thank’ Jason Garrett for.

2. Under the circumstances, I think Philbin has done a very good job. And if McCarthy stays, he will likely stay as well.
I have to admit I wasn't smitten with Philbin when he first got here, but I think your right and I was wrong about him.

Callahan got hosed here, what a shame.

I'm pretty sure he's on an expiring contract by standards. As a rule, head coaches signs contracts for 5 years, coordinators for 3 years and position coaches for 2-3 years. This ( read years ago by former NFL GM ) gives the head coach flexibility with his staff. Now, this of course doesn't mean their contracts are quietly extended, especially position coaches, w/o a media release. He signed with the Browns in January 2020. See the Cowboys extension with Kellen Moore below for reference.

Cleveland Browns rumors: Bears making a run at o-line coach Bill Callahan

by Nick Dudukovich11 months ago

They say build through the trenches, and that’s what it looks like new Bears coach Matt Eberflus is trying to do, at the cost of the Cleveland Browns.

Eberflus is reportedly trying to lure offensive line coach Bill Callahan out of Cleveland, according to veteran Bears’ writer Erik Lambert, of SportsMockery.com.

Lambert correctly noted that if Ebeflus was able to pull this off, it would amount to “Highway Robbery” and he’s right.

Callahan has been instrumental to the offensive line ever since taking the job under Kevin Stefanski. He was widely credited with successfully employing the zone-blocking scheme during the Covid-crazy year of 2020, which saw the Browns get to the playoffs.

Dallas Cowboys[edit]

The Dallas Cowboys hired Callahan as their offensive line coach during the 2012 offseason. On June 4, 2013, Dallas owner Jerry Jones announced that Callahan would call plays on offense during the upcoming 2013 season, allowing head coach Jason Garrett to focus on game management.[35] After being the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys during the 2013 season, he was stripped of his play-calling duties. During the 2014 off-season, the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens both asked Dallas for permission to interview Callahan for their open offensive coordinator positions, but Dallas declined.[36] Dallas let Callahan's contract as offensive line coach expire after the 2014-2015 season, allowing him to seek other opportunities.[37] At the time, Callahan was considered among the best offensive line coaches in the NFL, and some considered him to be the leading reason behind the success of the Dallas Cowboys offensive line, which had 3 linemen (Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and Travis Frederick) named to the 2014 All-Pro Team.[38]

For the record by the standards mentioned above, Philpin could also be on an expiring contract.

I think people are in love with Callahan because of what he did with a hall of fame line. I think y’all are giving him too much credit. Philbin has gotten a lot out of his unit.

How can Eberflus talk to Callahan while Callahan is under contract with the Browns?
- Wouldn't Eberflus have to interview him for O-Coordinator to be allowed to contact him?

Callahan was awesome in Dallas as the OLine coach. The best coach in the Garrett era.

Garrett is the reason that Callahan departed.

Jerry didn't let him out of the final year of the contract to make a lateral move, but I doubt if Callahan is mad about that.

He’s obviously a legend, but I don’t think he’d ever work for Jerry again.
Too much bad blood there.
That bridge is burned and then airstriked

Bringing back Callahan has been a dream of mine since his departure.. Jerry's refusal to let him out of his contract for a lateral coaching job with another team pretty much guarantees we'll never see him on the Cowboys' sideline ever again.

- Most teams would not let an assistant make a lateral move.
- That would be similar to letting a player out of his contract.

I want Jason Peters as my OL coach, even if he comes back as a player and acts as a leader, player, coach.. under the guise of being a depth. Our offensive line looks pretty good, overall, and he has a lot to do with it.

First, there can be no contact with other team assistant coaches without permission OR after their current contract expires. Interviewing assistant coaches ( coordinators included ) head coaching jobs are the only ones that don't require permission. In other even if Eberflus want to hire Callahan as an OC, which would be a promotion, would STILL need Brown's permission unless he wait until after his contract expires.

I would be happy to have Callahan back but as others have said, he wouldn't be interested in working for the Jones'.
