Bring back McBriar?

Was just looking at free agent punters and noticed his name on the list. He didn't punt much last year, but averaged 46.8 per punt, which would have put him in the top 10 if he maintained it for a season. (Had a down year in Pittsburgh the previous season, which led to him being cut and not picked up immediately.)

Not saying I'd want to just give him the job at 35, but he might be good competition to bring in on the cheap.

I'm sure the FO will bring in some punters this summer to give Jones some competition. Regarding McBriar, bring him in and see if he can still kick at 35.

Cowboys signed Hornsey to compete with Jones for now. I'm sure others will be looked at. But Jones is a RFA too, I believe.
I would pass on McBriar for several reasons. He would require vet minimum, and a rookie or Jones would cost less. Jones isn't great, but he's not a slob either. As well as McBriar is not what he was before.

I think the Cowboys liked Horney's leg strength, but he needed work on his overall punting. I think it was more of a ball placement issue, not hang time or distance.

Net is important. But net is more of a team stat

Neither guy is a weapon, so I'd keep Jones since he and Bailey are tight. Why screw with that chemistry on the snap also?

I think it's difficult to judge punters on net yards per punt.Net is the product of a lot of things, including special teams coverage.

IMO Chris Jones fails the eye test. I'm surprised we can't find an upgrade and he is still on the team.

Any punter can sacrifice the hang time for more yards. So net can be very telling without being able to show each hang time.

I believe he then worked on it and we didn't have any issues from there. It certainly wasn't something he was good at when he first got the job.

He may have worked on it but it is something he didn't "like to do"

I think Jones was better before he got hurt and we changed special teams coaches. His first year taking over for McBriar, Jones was great at directional kicking to the sideline.

I didn't mind McBriar being gone at that point because McBriar wasn't the same punter he'd been. He's had some time to recuperate now, though, and punters don't age as fast as other players as far as wear and tear goes. At this point, I'd rather take a cheap look at him than Jones.
