With Witten retiring, I think it would be a good move to sign an experienced vet to a one year deal. For what it's worth, the Chargers just announced they won't be re-signing Gates. (ha ha ha ha, yeah. I know.)

Bringing in FA Anthony Fasano would be almost too perfect to pass up (from a story perspective, not a talent one)

Julius Thomas is also out there.

Tight End
Signed: Jimmy Graham, Trey Burton, Cameron Brate, Derek Carrier, Virgil Green, Niles Paul, Lee Smith, Darren Fells, Tyler Eifert, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Ed Dickson, Eric Ebron, Luke Willson, Logan Paulsen, Ben Watson, Troy Niklas
Best Available:

All the top free agents have been signed. The rest of the pack includes aging veterans or underperforming veterans. Take your pick.

I think they have to at least consider it. Outside of Goedert, I dont see a lot of them in the draft I would want to just walk out there and start blocking and catching. Not even too sure about Goedert, honestly.

it feels like im playing fantasy football and my TE has the bye week....not many options out there....hope RICO is the real deal

And all of those top free agents ranked behind old man Witten. Haters are about to miss them some Jason Witten

I think that would be a possibility even if we draft a tight end. The team may really like some of the guys they have, but the experience level is very low. Having a veteran fallback would be good ... and any deal received at this point would probably allow the team to cut him if he's outperformed by the young guys.

If we don’t believe Rico is the real deal then I want us to move up and draft Dallas Goedert. The guy is a highlight reel who has a natural receiving ability that is worth the risk.

No. This is now a 2 year rebuild. Go with youth. Don't over-think this. Get Geodert and be done with it.

I'm going to keep an eye on this Blake Jarwin. The Cowboys clearly saw something there to sign him to the active roster last year to keep Philly from poaching him off the practice squad.

Jarwin is a big kid that can really run. He's not the blocker Witten was, but Jarwin is what the NFL has become at the position (if that makes sense).

This is more like it vs total panic.
Now if we can get a great value in the draft, we still need to take it.

No Vets, no rent a players...go young and grow as a team. We need to be dumping older players and get young and try to save cap room. JMO

Not worried about it. Plenty guys can run 5 yards, box out the defender. Catch the ball and drop.

I agree, a lot of people wanted to run him out of town but now we'll see how much he meant to the team and the organization. Reminds me of when fans wanted Romo gone. Losing Dez and Witten in the same week is pretty rough to swallow. Two of my favorite players on the team and Witten is one of my favorite all time players. Woodson, Witten, Romo, Emmitt, Irvin, and Aikman are my top six and in that order. It's been a bad day for me.

But o well, I'll get over it. I strongly agree with the OP's premise. Lets not change our draft strategy for this year. Let's rent a veteran for a season with the understanding that we're going to lose production from that position for a season. Address it next season and make a run next season. Our offense was going to be stagnant without Dez. I'd just assume get the defense fixed and the trenches set and then next year hit the skill positions hard in the draft and FA. JMO

I'll take Marcedes Lewis as a stop gap for one year. Good blocker, great red zone threat, and a good locker room guy.

He's been one of the most underrated TEs in the league since he came in. He's a little long in the tooth, but on a one year deal, hell yeah.
