Broadband modem compatibility issue

Got a friend who has a broadband modem that isn't compatible with Win7 and the provider does not have a driver to download to make it work. I don't think they intend to either.

He doesn't want to get another modem, yet, sooo...

He believes there's a way to set up his computer to run stuff not Win7 compatible. Said he's seen it, but can't find it.

Any ideas on where to find that function?

A broadband modem is not compatible? Is it an internal modem? Most modems today are like routers. You connect your computer to the modem rather than plug the modem into the computer.

If you connect a router to the modem, then Windows 7 shouldn't have any issues with it. (or is this a USB modem for a laptop and the like?)

We would also need more information. Like the modem brand and model number and the service being used.

The "Windows 7 compatibility mode" is what you're looking for. (Google that) I'm not sure that works on the hardware level. It is usually on the application level. (could try it though if the modem app/driver is a GUI application)

May just get a router and plug the modem into the router and the computer into the router.

But i've never heard of a broadband router not being compatible. It doesn't even connect to your pc in a way it would need drivers.

Yeah lot of things say ___compatible but the latest OS still can work fine with it.

I agree with nyc it might be something else that is the problem not the modem's compatibility. I would search the brand and model and see if someone had not figured out what the real problem is.

If it happens to be OS, I know that on more advanced Win7 editions there is XP mode, I am no expert so someone else has to explain how to operate out of the XP within win7. That or possibly loading a second OS and having a dual boot option on startup. My guess is it would have to be Linux or ubuntu or whatever that co habitates with WIndows.

I might have worded this wrong..

It's one of those USB-wireless modem thingys provided by a Wireless carrier.

And the carrier doesn't have a driver to support Win7.

He's not able to run the software for the computer to detect the modem.

But he says there's a way for him to do using some compatibility thing, but I don't know how to make that work.

You right click the file (setup.exe, etc) and go to properties. There's a compatibility tab that lets you select an older OS.

Or you can do it with the 'Compatibility Assistant'... which accomplishes the same thing, it just holds your hand throughout the process.

That's probably verizon. We had issues with Win 7 and their modem to go thingy. Ended up just plugging into an XP computer so no help here. Hope Kilyin's method works.
