Scout's Notebook: Xavier Woods' Big Night; Other Defensive Standouts

LOS ANGELES – Here are my 12 biggest impressions from my perch in the radio booth at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the Cowboys finished up their second preseason contest:

The coaching staff has to be pleased with the way that Xavier Woods played. Woods received an extensive look early in the contest and held up well throughout. I had some questions about his ability to play as a down safety in the box, but he showed me that any concerns that I had were unnecessary. Woods is a highly intelligent player -- but more importantly, he showed a physical side as well with some big hits.

Better game from Taco Charlton. He played on the Rams’ side of the ball, which was different than what I saw last week against the Cardinals. He was more active and by playing that way, it put him in better position to make plays -- which he was able to do. His technique wasn't poor and his conditioning looked improved. Keep an eye out for him playing some nickel tackle, working with DeMarcus Lawrence in the future to create some pressure on opponents.

Lewis Neal is my pet cat. Comeon Neal! Go cowboys

I can't wrap my head around that dude. He's like 6 foot, weighed 260 at his Pro Day, but DC.com has him at 298. Geez. You'd think he'd get killed because that is probably some dirty weight.

But he's been playing well in practice and in the preseason games. We could use another inside guy that gets upfield. He'll be interesting to watch.

It's funny bro but guys with wierd body types can cause problems. I got this one buddy who is 5'10" 275 and he causes lots of problems at da clubzz lol. I hear you though. He's not the prototypical height

Haha Tren's bad mmmk.

He supposedly has really long arms so his height is probably okay. If he can learn to play with leverage his height might be a benefit.

I was mainly talking about his weight. That dude was 260 at his Pro Day in like March. He gained like 40 pounds in 5 months, he'd be lucky if 15 of that was actual muscle.

You'd think he'd get pushed around and be slow after putting on 40 pounds that quick. Nope. He's been the opposite. I'd be interested to see what he could do with a year just training to play inside.

He might be one we hang onto during the suspensions and try and find a spot for.

We've added some valuable pieces this draft. Neal's kinda a pet cat but he wasn't right after. Not till
I heard he was causing noise So I'm a little late.
I trust success in the draft so if the coaches and FO feel Rush isn't all that I think we can get one next year.
He may be all that I like what I'm seeing.
OK, Lenny Jones keep coming I like his activity.
We are finally getting our roster built. With that comes losing some good talent at cut down time.
We made a living raiding other's teams PS so now we'll experience the same thing.

Players like Neal, LJones, Noah Brown,Andy Jones.

Oh and one of my points of concern has been the D1. Paea is looking like the answer to TMcClain maybe better.
Paea will make MCollins even better.

We've got some problems and we've got some answers.

Very impressed with Neal so far.

Might be or next "steal" in UDFA finds. (Yes, still very early, but he has done nothing but impress so far)

I've read that he was listed at 272 during his last game at LSU, so he may have gotten his weight down to 260 for his pro day thinking most teams were viewing him as a DE (which he played at LSU). So the 270s might be more of his natural weight, but yea, that's still a big jump up in weight in a short span of time.

And who knows how accurate DC.com is with this sort of info....

I think Broaddus has a bit of an agenda sometimes... A "Better" game from Lenny Jones? He was everywhere, and wreaked havoc like an alpha football player.

I don't think (I'm admittedly too lazy to research it) he got that much burn in the HOF game to put any kind of stamp on his play until Saturday's contest.
