OXNARD, Calif. – This might seem obvious, but I just want to share a quick reminder that it’s not about the score.

The Cowboys will visit the San Francisco 49ers for their preseason opener on Thursday night. We will likely see some, but certainly not all of their star players for a little bit. And then the game will give way to the back end of the depth chart.

It’s probably not going to be a very pretty game of football, and the Cowboys may even lose. But that’s not the point. During these preseason exhibitions, the Cowboys’ coaching staff is trying to see who they have on this roster and how they might help this team going forward

Rather than worrying about the score, it’s all about evaluation in these settings. Who carries over their practice performances into the game? Who puts his best foot forward? This is the first big test of the preseason, and it will go a long way in shaping our opinions of these players.

With that in mind, here are some notes on what I want to see from this outing:

Let the rookies play after the starters do their thing.

I want to see the rookies. I want Rush to have some time, than have Mike White ready to go. The Wrs are going to need a lot of work. We need to see depth across the boards. Gregory could use this time. Let them play, let them make the mistakes. Get data, get data get data.

Just watch to see some football. Bad football, but still football. Don't actually look for things or try to glean some meaning, there is none.

First game i probably won’t be paying attention to the detail as much as just enjoying seeing a game the cowboys are playing...

"Green has looked much better these previous three practices playing on that right side, so hopefully he can carry that confidence with him into the game."

He's still trying to sell this?

Man! Where's that "dead horse" emoji when you need it!

I don't see Gregory playing in this game. He hasn't even had a full practice. All his work has been on the side.

He needs the work. But I don't see him playing a game until he's had several practices under his belt.

1) LVE
2) DL, especially DE depth
3) Corner depth
4) Backup QBs and their rhythm with the WRs on the field

I enjoy the preseason games, and will be watching everybody that plays, but these are probably the things I'll be watching for anyway.

Watching for Bo Scarbrough to make a impact on this team.

Curious to see what type of motor Armstrong has as well on the D-line
I'm looking to see what Scarborough will do as well. I like his size/strength/speed mix.

Also looking to see how LVE does. I'm sure he will make plenty of mistakes. But that's what these games are for.

Finally, will ANY TE do ANYTHING down the field?

I want to see if Bo Knows football. lol I liked the kid at Bama and looking forward to seeing him compete for the job. Also looking forward to see DB under Richard how they play a more physical style or not and of course WR group.

Just about everywhere you look they will be battles going on for snaps. It will be interesting to see who comes out of the blocks fast, and then there's Rico Gathers the legend. Stay healthy men!

I want to see the DLine. These DTs are going to need to produce in regular season games, I need to see reason to believe they will.

Also want to see our young edge rushers. Love this group but I do not think all of our DEs can make the team. Hopefully someone is willing to trade a conditional pick for one of our last DEs, Ealy or Tapper.

What NOT to watch, the scoreboard!!!

These are preseason games and too many fans get all hot and bothered every year about what the Cowboys are doing offensively/defensively, why aren't they throwing deep, why run on third and nine, why aren't they blitzing etc etc etc.....these are preseason games, they're about one thing and one thing only, evaluating players, they're not scheming, if you want to evaluate the second team running game on the right side, they're going to run to the right side to evaluate the runnung game regardless the score, down and distance......so ignore the scoreboard, it doesn't mean anything!!
