I was planning to do a trades April Fools mock and didn't get it done...

27 DT TIMMY JERNIGAN FLORIDA STATE Donald, Barr, Evans gone traded back twice. Starts next to Melton

47 S JIMMIE WARD NORTHERN ILLINOIS 2nd round started with a big run on Oline, Crichton went at 46, Martin 43.

64 DE JACKSON JEFFCOAT TEXAS I'm a Longhorns homer, but I don't usually like their players for Dallas, I think Jeffcoat has a little something and he's had so so coaching and a crappy training staff at UT.

84 G DAKOTA DOZIER FURMAN I'm not sure Dozier will be here, Billy turner went three places later at 87, if Dozier wasn't here I still had Turner who I like.

119 CB PHILLIP GAINES RICE Needed Size and Depth at CB, I ran to the podium for this kid here.

120 RB BISHOP SANKEY WASHINGTON Way to low for him, but RB's seem to fall, good for us

132 DT CARAUN REID PRINCETON Can't have a Dallas Mock draft without this guy, smart, quick, good motor

158 WR BRUCE ELLINGTON SOUTH CAROLINA More quick than fast, good depth, pushing Beasley and Harris

187 WR MIKE DAVIS TEXAS Talented guy has a knack for getting behind the DB's not much performance and seemed really inconsistent, but the UT QB situation was horrible.

216 OLB DENICOS ALLEN MICHIGAN STATE He's too small can't disengage, but he's a football player, explosive guy. I traded 7(16) and 7(23) to come get him. I like the guy and I always just miss him.

248 FB TREY MILLARD OKLAHOMA

251 OT MATT PATCHAN BOSTON COLLEGE

254 S JAMEA THOMAS GEORGIA TECH

I don't think they pull the trigger on a #1 technique DT in round 1.

Nor do I think they take a safety that high.

I wouldn't mind if they traded back like this scenario and took Jernigan at all! He can Cha Cha.
Too many WR's and agree on too high safety pick.

Jernigan @ #27 wouldn't be a bad pick at all; there are other guys that I like in this mock as well...I am not big on safeties in this draft at all (I like Pryor but he isn't worth a first rounder to me and won't last until our 2nd rounder)

I assume that you did at least two trade downs to bundle all of those picks in before the 7th rounders?

I would be trilled with Jimmie Ward because he is the true center field type FS Dallas has been looking for.

I didn't think they'd take a center with a 1st round pick either, if you are going to take a safety then take a guy who you feel is better than what you've got. Why take another 4th or 5th rounder to throw in with the guys we have now? I probably would hae gone oline or DE if someone had been there the value was WR and Safety. It didn't fall well for me, but I could see us having to make some of those choices.

Yea i dropped to 20 when no one fell to us (Donald, Evans, Lewan). Thinking there were 5 or 6 guys i graded the same and hey we've got a lot of holes sooo... then none of the guys I was worried about going went so i figured I'd trade down again. I myself am a trenches guy, So I'd have taken Jernigan at 20, but knowing Dallas apparent feelings about the position I traded with the Saints and was able to still get him.

Having those comp picks allowed me to use our 7th's and a 6th I acquired as "sweeteners" to jump up a few spots and secure a couple of the guys I wanted.

I understand your point.

But there were many that thought they would take an interior lineman early in the 2012 draft.

I don't think you're going to see a safety drafted anywhere between rounds 1-5.

I don't think they'll draft a safety before the 5th round either, It was a guy I had rated as a late 1st, early 2nd available at 47. The DL and OL guys I had rated in the 2nd round were gone. The WR's available were mid to late 2nd round guys which was fine value. It was a great value pick to take him and it's not like our safeties are stellar. If the 2nd round goes like it did in this scenario we aren't gonna love whats on the board.

I don't hate it but I think that the safety was too high, jeffcoat won't make it to the third and I think millard goes 5th round or higher.

You think Dallas taking a safety in the 2nd is too high or Ward being taken there is too high? The Jeffcoat pick is the last pick of the 2nd round.

Sorry your right about the jeffcoat pick. I think its too high for ward. I'd be surprised if Jeffcoat makes it out of the top half of the second round.

why do people think Jerrigan can play only on spot - I do and would be happy with the pick

Timmy Jernigan, Florida State

What he brings: He is disruptive against the run and can make plays in the backfield and outside the tackle box. He is an adequate bull-rusher with room to improve in that area. He has an explosive first step and a relentless motor.

How he fits: Jernigan can play the 3-technique, but I think he might fit better as a 1-technique D-tackle, which is the shaded nose tackle position in the 4-3 alignment.

Where he fits: Like Donald, Jernigan would make sense for the Bears or Cowboys, although Jernigan isn't on Donald's level as a prospect

If he's there at #16, I don't think the Cowboys pick him.

I would agree, except in this scenario, if everyone else is gone, you almost have to.

A 3 tech becomes much less of a need with Melton here (not saying that we shouldn't take a Donald if he's there) so it gives you much more flexibility to just add good pieces. If other guys are gone, you can make the case that Jernigan, even if he is a 1-tech, is the best fit.

Ward may go even earlier than that, not later. imo

But there has already been a quote attributed to the Cowboys brain trust that they can get a #1 DT later on in the draft. Floyd was avoided last year under a similar scenario. Jerrigan will likely be also.

I get that...but that quote also came before Melton was signed.

I'm not saying they are going to target Jernigan, but if there is no other value at 26 or something, then its an easier pill to swallow with Melton already signed.

I dunno.

I could see they taking a DE, LB or OL before they took Jerrigan.

But in about 31 days and 9 hours we'll get some answers. ;)
