[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- High-priced defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson is among six players cut by the Denver Broncos.

Robertson, acquired last offseason from the New York Jets, was set to count $16 million against the team's $123 million cap.

Also released Monday by new general manager Brian Xanders were linebackers Niko Koutouvides ($3.06 million) and Jamie Winborn ($2.25 million), safety Marquand Manuel ($1.33 million), defensive end John Engelberger ($2.18 million) and tight end Nate Jackson (less than $1 million).

He doesn't seem to fit too well in the 3-4 defense that's why Denver is cleaning house besides trying to save money.

I was about to post the same thing, what do you think about Robertson at DE in the 3-4?

His money I'm having a hard time understanding, the Broncos signed him to a 5 year, 24 mil deal, and some how he was going to be worth 16 mil against the cap in just his second year with the team? That sounds like a ridiculous contract.

Denver runs the 3-4? Are they converting? If so, they have tons of guys that don't fit.

Maybe you meant the Jets, and that's possible.

I used to follow the Jets. He has chronic knee issues. The Jets were lucky that Denver took him off their scrap heap. We don't need to make the same mistake.

He probably had in range of a $10 million signing bonus, which is accelerated when you cut someone into the current cap. So he had $8million in bonus money and probably a salary of around $4million to be paid to him this year=$12 against the Broncos salary cap.

More than likely what he signed was in essence a 1 year deal with a rather large roster bonus being due sometime in year two meaning they would restructure or cut him depending on how well he performed.

But they said 16 mil if he stayed, so if his bonus is 8 mil, that would mean his salary would have to be 8 mil as well, which is absolutely crazy. And that's if he stayed.

I just read some more about his knees though, so forget what I said about wanting him. One site went as far as to say he may only have a year left in him, and he's only 27.

You're probably right, and if that's the case, he probably saw this coming. No way were they going to pay him 16 million in one year.

Thats $25 million Denver cut yesterday. Holy moly.
Seriously, wouldn't be surprised to see them make some sort of a big splash at this point.

I think Fred Taylor might be a good fit there. Good runner, savvy vet...injury prone.

Parcells liked Koutouvides coming out... Wonder if he goes for him.

Of course Parcells loved Robertson, too.

But I wonder if any of our guys liked the LB, too.

Also... For all you Shanahan fans -- and I don't hate him -- look at this disaster he assembled.

That's why he should strictly be a HC and not a GM.

I think Shanahan's a good coach, but I think the dual role of being the coach and making all the personnel decisions is probably too much for any one man.

but Jerry does it everyday!!!:laugh2:

I'd like to see Denver get Fred Taylor because I think Taylor still has a year or two in him.

As for Robinson I'm not impressed by him and I'd rather not give him a big contract to be here.

I thought Robertson would make more noise when he came out in the draft. He had quickness and looked like a good choice.

I guess the knees did him in, but even before that he wasn't much for where he was drafted.

He seemed like a good kid when I taught him at UK. He wasn't highly motivated, but it's hard to motivate someone who knows he has a huge payday in a year that has very little to do with how he does in school.

Nice insight.

There was something about him that Parcells was completely heads over heels for_which is funny, since every team that has transitioned to a 3-4 (Parcells' preferred scheme) cannot find a place for him.

When I watched him in college, he was stout but quick. He is big but a penetrator--I imagine that is what drew Parcells' attention. The thing that was a bit off was that he wasn't quite as strong at the point of contact as you would expect for his build and he wasn't consistent getting penetration--though he could be simply disruptive when he was on.

I was thinking about Taylor when I heard about the cut on the radio. Its not uncommon to see a good RB get cut near the end of his career, sign with another team, and have a really solid season or two.
Almost like they have to prove to themselves they still have it after the cut so they work extra hard for a few seasons before hanging it up.
Taylor could be one of those guys.

I remember that now, it was his burst off the line that made him such a high pick (combined w/his size). Sounds like a Wade type of DL too.

If he is healthy, Parcells may still be interested b/c he loves projects that only require adding strength (to his preferred frames). But Robertson may be better off losing some weight (get under 300 lbs) and play the 3 technique in a 4-3.

Again, it all depends on his knees.
