What's funny is that (at least in 2016) we were an average team on 3rd and short, and we were an average team on 3rd and long.

3rd down, 7+ yards to go
90 plays, 23 first downs 25.6% conversion rate (16th)

But we were actually a very good team on 3rd and medium.

Watching that highlight video of Romo commentating and picking apart every play before it happened tells me that footballs more about execution than predicability. We may be a bit predictable at times but we execute and outclass teams with talent. It also sets up the trick plays with us, since we don't typically do anything crazy it is more effective when we do. At the end of the day though we will run the ball down teams throats and there's not really much of anything they can do about it.

more surprised that 46% of the time, we were 3rd and long (when on 3rd down)....thus, from this point on, I am OK with getting first downs on 1st or 2nd down...make it so

Knowing what we do is easy, doing something about it is what's so hard... that's our 90's teams.

Right, it doesn't even matter what down you get your first down on, so in that respect, 3rd down conversion percentage will always be slightly overrated. In 2013, our struggles on 3rd down got a ton of attention, but almost nobody mentioned the fact that we ranked 2nd only to the Broncos' record-setting offense on 1st and 2nd down conversions.
