As I researched our new ILB, Andra (pronounced AHN-dray, just like Bly) Davis, two things stood out. He's not fast. Everyone agreed on that. It's his weakness, which can be mitigated in degree by putting him in the 3-4 defense. The other thing that stood out was that no one had an even slightly negative thing to say about this self-made gentleman. As a player, as a leader, as a servant in the community and as a man, Andra Davis is the kind of acquisition that makes you just want to cheer

Check out his stats when he was at CLE with Crennel:

Why do we need him? Did our ILBs not play well last season? Was Brooking not only an effective leader but also a on-field warrior?

I know Brooking is getting old and we're eventually going to have to replace him, but we need to do that by getting young players who can be groomed for the role.

Adding another vet ILB just doesn't make sense to me.

We do need a veteran backup ILB. Carp playing due to injury would be ugly. Not sure if you can find an affordable option out there, but if Davis is affordable it would be good.

A veteran backup at this point forces us to go with less youth at the position, limiting our chances of finding Brooking's eventual replacement.

The only way a veteran should be acquired is if it is someone who is just as good as Carpenter as the nickel linebacker. If he can't take that role, taking Carpenter's place on the roster, then we don't need him.

I also do not think at this point that it is a given that "Carp playing due to injury would be ugly," but the point is that we can't afford to keep a vet ILB backup and Carpenter on the roster because we need at least one spot for a young, developing player (although we probably will keep five, with two being developing players).

I'd honestly much rather pick up an ILB in the first round (and I'm against that unless the player is much better than others available at positions I think are a higher priority) than sign a vet backup.
