Irving, Texas — Last man standing gets to block a Cowboy.
Chad Mustard? Get on in there. And take off that tight end jersey.
While the Broncos continue to shop defensive tackle Gerard Warren, they also are looking to sign a free-agent offensive tackle, and possibly a second lineman, in the next few days.
The team suffered back-to-back blows in a two-day span this week when rookie left tackle Ryan Harris underwent back surgery and veteran right tackle Adam Meadows suffered a severely strained right calf.
Harris is out four to six weeks and Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said Meadows would be out at least two weeks. And while starting left tackle Matt Lepsis returned Thursday and will play here Saturday night in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, he has been gimpy with a groin strain.
Another Broncos' backup tackle, Dallas second-round pick Jacob Rogers, has been down for more than a week with a knee injury.
To compensate, the Broncos moved Mustard, who had hamstring issues during camp, from tight end to right tackle and switched his number from 85 to 71.
"There are some guys we didn't think would get any playing time, and now they are going to get a chance to play half to three quarters of the game," said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "It should be interesting."
Erik Pears is once again the starter at right tackle, although he could also play at left tackle after Lepsis leaves with the first unit. Cliff Washburn, a 27-year-old, converted basketball player from The Citadel who never has played in an NFL game, should also get significant playing time at tackle as could right guard Chris Kuper, who played left tackle his senior year in college. After losing his starting right guard spot to Montrae Holland two weeks ago, Kuper has played some tackle this week.
Meanwhile, the Broncos have been playing without starting left guard Ben Hamilton, who has missed most of the preseason with a concussion.
Warren talks
Although, it's taken longer than hoped, the Broncos remain confident they will trade Warren within a week.
Warren, a starting defensive tackle the previous two seasons, did not accompany the team on its trips to play preseason games against San Francisco and Dallas. He was told Sunday to stay home because the team was trading him.
Crowder update
Broncos rookie defensive end Tim Crowder remained on crutches Friday, a day after suffering a severely sprained left ankle during a scrimmage with the Cowboys. X-Rays were negative and while he'll have to heal quickly to not miss the rest of the preseason, the Broncos are hopeful. "Greek thinks there's a chance he'll be ready next week so that's a positive sign," Shanahan said referring to head trainer Steve Antonopulos
