Spy Michael Vick on 3rd Down?

I think we WILL see Carter this week in sub packages on long distance yardage. The guy can just flat FLY- his sideline to sideline speed is insane.

Or is it too soon for Carter to get this job?

I don't expect to see him on defense but with Rob Ryan you never know

I keep seeing people mention this and can't understand why you'd put a rookie coming off knee surgery in his first NFL game ever in this situation? He has a long way to go to even warrant significant time on the defense let alone being able to spy a guy like Vick, imo.

I'm going into the game hoping to see him get in on some special teams and hopefully run well and even make a play or two. If he sees even one play on defense I'd be thrilled Ryan thinks he's ready for that. Anything more then that is not even on my radar for him right now. I'd love to be wrong and see him come in and kick butt in a major role, but I don't see that happening.

i still dont know why we didnt sideline this guy and wait til next year.

He will play special teams and ONLY play on the defense if there are injuries or we have a 40 point lead in the 4th quarter.

Outstanding post. Really just a lot of common sense. Can't see why anyone would expect more.

If the doctors give him clearance, and he has a chance to help us this year and is better than the last ILB on the roster, then what is to be gained by keeping him on the sideline? Activating him doesn't mean you have to throw him to the dogs in a sink or swm fashion. He can be eased in whenever appropriate opportunities present themselves, and hopefyully can contribute in some capacity this year, and be better preparared when training camp starts next year.

Carter said he expects to play special teams primarily and work himself into some subpackages.

I don't see that changing too much for the first couple of games.

I think it would be a great sign to see him make a ST tackle.

It would be great if his 1st game he gets the chance to go after a punt block. That would be a great way to start your NFL career. :D

I agree. Some people seem to think Carter is a sure thing, as if there are such players, and as if it is certain that the injury and long layoff had no effect. I'm excited to see what he can do like others, but it is not a certainty that he will be anything special in the NFL even in the long run, much less being worthy of much of a role anytime soon. The reality is we have no feel for the guy at all as to his ability to play in the NFL. I hope we can start seeing a glimpse of that right away, but the liklihood is that it will take some time to start getting anything close to a real sense of what he is capable of.

Special teams....and maybe a few defensive plays, if we are way ahead, or in a situation where he / team won't get burned.

I agree with your reason why he plays. If he's physically ready, he stands to gain great experience to better prepare him to compete for a starting spot next year.

It's not about his being a major contributor this year, it's about his gaining experience, learning to trust his knee and our evaluating what his potential is for next year.

To understand, you must first acknowledge from where concepts are sometimes conceived.

More common sense. That's not always the case in these threads.
